its normal for our cars make a clicking noise while downshifting to a stop right? but is it normal having it downshift hard into first coming to a stop in neutral? also, what level on the tranny dipstick should the oil be on, mine is above the upper most hole on the dipstick, will that cause a problem? i notice that it is indicated by warm and hot, what the hell is that suppose to mean? does the level rise when the car is hot? should it be at warm when the car is cold?

i know that was a lot of questions but any help would be appreciated. i am most concern about the hard downshift into first while the shifter is in neutral. thanks in advance.

if u check the fluid when the tranny is warm.....then the fluid should be where the warm mark is....depending on if the right amount of fluid is in the tranny......and same goes for the hot mark....when its hot......thats where it should be on the dip stick......just check it when u know the car is warmed up and the tranny is in its normal range.......yes we all have that damn clickin sound when we come to a stop.....but as far as the neutral thing goes......i dont know......do u keep it in neutral untill your stopped completely or do u put it back in drive befor your stopped......if u do this then the tranny is gonna go into the gear hard depending on what rpm your at......no good to rev in neutral and then drop it into drive.....if u do for some reason just let the rpm's drop back down to 1000 and then put into drive......

I have never come to a stop while in neutral. by the sounds of it I wouldn't want to try. the only time that I have experienced what you are describing is when I was racing, I forgot and left the car in first. when I slowed back down, it clunked into first gear, instead of that smooth mechanical whirr into first at a stop.

I don't forget any more after that.

my car does the same thing, and has done it since i bought it at 42k miles (it now has 78k) so i wouldnt worry about it too much. the first time i heard it i thought, well the tranny is f'ed but after about 15k miles i just wondered if it was normal, and im still wondering...:wary

i stayed in neutral all the way to a complete stop. i use to do it all the time in my old car for smoother stops but in the eclipse, it'll just bang into first. ever since i notice it bangs, i stopped using neutral to stop. i think its related to those damn chrysler clicks. i don't hear them while downshifting in neutral either.

as for the tranny oil, where is the drain plug? i think i have too much in there. could that be the cause of the tranny bang?

The "bang" could be a bad input/output sensors. It could be excessive fluid, or not enough fluid.

There is no drain plug on our tranny, you can however drop the pan and put one in yourself.

the click noise youre talking abuot sounds like the valve body pushing oil through the tranny.

Dfresh i tried rolling to a stop in neutral and yes it does clunk ... DONT DO IT ..any noise that clunks that hard cant be good .. leave the auto in D

i always shift mine into neutral at stops. its like a habit, maybe from driving a m/t. but i always shift it.

rarely do i get the clunk that you guys are talking about, but i know exactly what you mean, because i have experienced it before. shifting to neutral at a stop shouldnt be bad for the tranny, its just a normal act of shifing, you know?

as long as you arent neutral dropping, you should be fine. i even downshift from od to od/off, d to 2.
