Alright, i have a few friends. one of them works at a place that does a decent ammount of powdercoating, and I have a hardware store where i can get my hands on 3/4" MDF. Another friend of mine has good experience making ported/sealed boxes. We can do a bandpass as well. Im going to make up a 12" bandpassbox, and im going to get it powdercoated black. I'll post some pics of when i get around to it. Someone asked me to try and make a custom enclosure for the sides of the trunk. If you guys have any ideas, or input let me know. They don't have to be powdercoated, but i can get powdercoat in ANY color, and tons of other colors. We can mix colors, there is a color called silver vein. its silver with black veins in it. ill post a pic of this piece of metal my friend brought back. if you just need general powdercoating done as well, tell me. ANY ideas are welcome! If you have interior color themes, or just want a tough, sleek looking coating on ur box, powdercoat is t3h shit! it can come textured too and in hammer tones. We want to start this right away so start leavin any kind of feedback.

actually, im getting mine done silver vein, and my intake too. It depends on the color and if you want a clear coat finish on it, they can do crazy stuff. if the powder is in stock, then its not a big deal, but if you order it in, it costs a little more depending on how much you buy. we may decide to get some popular colors in stock. i can take a picture of all the colors we have. there are pages of them. What colors would u guys like tho? Im going to assume blue, red, yellow, black.... green? it doesn't take much powder to coat stuff. but it is fairly spendy. Im going to get my calipers done while im at it.

Can MDF be powdercoated. I thought they used an electric charge to make the powder particles stick to the object and then baked them on. Can this be done on wood???

Ok, first, you can powdercoat just about anything. Plastics, metals obviously, woods, hell even furniture or your computer monitor.

Metals are commonly coated using a thermosetting powder. You spray on the powder using a corona powder gun, place it in your convection oven and let it sit for 15-30 minutes depending on the application and substrate. Tada, let it cool and you have nice powder coated metal.

MDF can be heated/cured at about 120*C using modern coating systems that are either IR(infrared) or a combination of IR and convection.

Some plastics, and MDF mainly can be powder coated using special(UV) powders. You can use a specialized spray gun called a TRIBO gun. This specialized gun can cause the powder to stick to wood, plastic, daves butt. Tribo is the word for the effect you have when you scuff your feet on a carpetted floor, or rub a balloon on your head. Yes, that static shit. The way the gun works, is it pretty much ionizes the powder as it shoots out by rubbing the powder up against a teflon surface, transfering an electron to the teflon and giving the powder a positive charge. This helps give the material a nice, even coat on the surface.

Once you've got the powder on your part your coating, then whip out your IR lamps and heat up the powder till it reaches a molten stage. The powder will flatten out, and then while it is still in a molten state, you put the UV lights on the melted powder and it cures. UV's are pretty much like a microwave. The UV powder has photoinitiators that starts a chemical reaction causing the powder to cure.

Good. Now on to the opinions. Who would want their car powdercoated like me? Shit. I would love to do my interior.

I highly doubt you can powdercoat my butt. I want proof.

Won't it look like shit though, you will see all the seams on screw holes. Could you use putty and smooth it over? Would the powder coat stick to the putty? And what happens when the putty chips off of the MDF?

I like the idea alot, but I see alot of problems with it.

Well, it will only look as good as you want it to. MDF is a pretty flat surface. but as for the screw holes, you'd have to use a filler, and possibly a primer on it. Then UV powder coat it, and bam. but anything that is oil based will not go through the bake process. I will eventually put up a pic of some powdercoated mdf. i have a pic of some metal we coated just for kicks of that silver vein. the IR/UV equipment is EXPENSIVE. And getting my hands on it will be a chore also. Im gauging the interest here. I can literally powdercoat anything i want if i decide this route.

dave, stop by. and we'll clamp you down in some frankenstein vice grips.... electrostatically charge the powder to ur face, and then put you through the oven.


EDIT: corners of boards and things like that can be solved by putting trim around those parts if there is no time/money to get it just right. I will look around and see how well fiberglass holds up to IR/UV. And also, Anything to do with magnetism is the biggest myth in powder coating.

I'm not knocking you at all here but I've never seen wood powdercoated, I'd like to see a pic of that too. I also thought the curing heat was alot higher than 120....... :shrug this all sounds very interesting don't let it be like the hinge debacal.

Look at the link I posted. Or Google "wood powder coating". It is a real thing and it's not done the same way as metal powder coating. I just don't trust it for making speaker boxes. I'll stick with gelcoating and glassing.

don't trust it? thats ok, im have a single bandpass 12" box with 2 ports here, im rippin off the carpet and takin everything off it. Im going to get it rubber powder coated for free. Otherwise, im going to buy some super mirror black and coat it like that. Looks so cool. You guys SHOULD be skeptical. I haven't shown you anything. i was just curious if anyone wanted some nice stuff for decently cheap. I just found out that i can do engine blocks and headers too. That high temp stuff is EXPENSIVE...

the curing heat for metals are very high. It depends hugely on the powder. There are many types of powder, that must be cured at different temperatures for longer or shorter periods of time. In a convection oven, you can watch as the powder turns from a pale color, to a sweaty look, and then to a smoooth watery look. very cool process. With IR lamps, it can take longer or shorter, depending on the lamps. The reason you have to heat metals so hot and for so long, is its the metals temp that matters, not the air. It takes 20 mins for metal to get up to temp, and then it starts to work. If you tried to do that at 120* on a chunk of steel, it would take forever and be totally pointless. Thats why they just blast the heat on it. With a different substrate, you can take a bit longer and still have the same effect.

I want pics. I want to get allot of the parts for my truck powdercoated so this could be cool. Put up some pics man. :-)
