As most of you know I work for Callies Performance Products, and I am trying to expand our reach in the tuner market by offering our Aero-Shedding services. While more often than not we use this process on crankshafts to reduce friction, I have also seen people use this on connecting rods, camshafts, gears etc.

FAQ

What is Aero-Shedding?
Aero-Shed is a micro/super polish procedure done to metal. Most people are more familiar with REM finishes, however this is not a REM, we do not use chemicals to etch the parts. So what does all this mean? It makes the part extremely smooth. This accomplishes 2 things, reduction in friction, and strengthens the part!

The point?
Less friction means more horsepower and better gas mileage. A smoother surface reduces stress risers and in turn, makes for a stronger part.

What can be Aero-Shed?
Just about anything that is metal, however the most popular things would be cranks, rods, and head components. Although I have seen compressor wheels, gears turbine housings and etc.

Turn Around Time?
For standard items, such as cranks and rods, about 3-5 days(not including shipping time). For more unique items, look at around 2 weeks.

Pricing?
Cranks $250 per crank
Con Rods $250 per set of rods
Camshafts $187 a pair

-=Disclaimer=-
Aero-Shedding does smooth out parts and reduce friction! HOWEVER, results will vary depending on the base part to be worked on (especially visually). The better the machine work the better the results. Most parts we have Aero-Shed look chrome, however visual appearance can vary by material type and if it is a
forging/billet or cast piece.

Do you have some kind of graphical representation or data sheet that shows before and after coefficient of friction?

I do not have a graph.
Trying to think of the best way to answer you because sadly for something like this there are so many variables, and at the same time different answers for different parts of the engine, as well as. Not to mention difference in machining, and... At the end of the day I want to just be like "It's smoother!" but short of giving you that answer, let me see if I can find some hard data, and a better explanation.

Not exactly what you where looking for but a very good article about super finishing transmission parts leading to a 5% increase in hp through reduction of friction, along with a bunch of other neat facts.

Callies certainly has "before and after" sample parts pictures. That might help convey the point. The manufacturer of the machine probably has Ra numbers for before and after samples as well (not that these numbers mean much to the general populace).

I can give you a before and after of the billet, as far as other pieces, I will keep my eye out for some to come up the line. When they do I will snap some pics and give you before and after samples.

For the guys going to the shootout, I will be bringing a sample, trying to work on a half&half sample, but not sure if it will work. If it does not, then will be 2 separate pieces.

Before and after of the Billet (Our billet has very good machining on it, just an FYI)

Working on getting some pics of the sample piece I took to the shootout. Also another good article on super finishing.
