121575, Aluminum Radiator Group Buy At RTM Racing! Posted by teklein, Jan-07-13 04:58 AM
Hey,
A while ago RTM posted about what the 420A crowd needs - and they found their first item. I am going to copy and paste their email to me as well as their contact information.
Post here for any questions, or email them.
Paul @ RTM: Paul@rtmracing.com
"RTM has checked into various rad upgrade options for the 2gNT platform. It seems there was a time when several aftermarket rad manufacturers made high-performance aluminum rads for this platform. That no longer seems to be the case. The only manufacturer we could find that still claimed to make such a rad (or at least still had inventoried quantities) was Fluidyne. Well, we checked more closely and found that they had discontinued production of this rad some time ago. We were also unable to purchase a single Fluidyne rad from any vendor that carried Fluidyne products as they had no inventory.
Okay, so what's a 2gNTer who wants a high performance aluminum rad to do? Well, one option that's been available from day one is to go with an aftermarket rad for a 2g turbo. There are a multitude of manufacturers and lines to choose from for these rads. The only catch is that the locations of the rad hose inlet/outlets differ, so NTers are forced to go with some kind of custom rad hoses to plumb it into the engine. This can get expensive and make for some convoluted, unsightly rad hose configurations.
In response to the absence of a proper high-performance aluminum rad for the 2gNT, RTM Racing has decided to approach one of our major suppliers and ask them to manufacture a rad specific to the 2gNT. They agreed to set up a production run if we agreed to purchase a minimum of 30 units. RTM is prepared to make such a purchase if we can pre-sell a certain number first. For sake of argument, let's put that number at 10-15 units to be pre-sold. We plan to carry these rads on our website as a regular inventoried item, so we certainly don't need to pre-sell all 30 units.
Some details on the rads themselves: They will be made by a manufacturer in China to the specs we provide. It's the same manufacturer that makes the rads for the 2g turbo that we carry (and several other DSM parts as well). They will be essentially identical to these turbo rads except that the inlet/outlets and drain port will be re-oriented to the NT style. Here's a link to the turbo rad on which they'd be based: https://www.rtmracing.com/xcart/product.php?productid=18090&cat=353&page=1
This is where the "Group Buy" comes in. We need to pre-sell a certain minimum number of these rads in order to give the manufacturer the go-ahead with production (RTM has not yet determined an absolute minimum number, but it will probably be at least 10). Here is how the group buy is going to work: Initially, we'd just like a list of those who would at least be interested in such a rad. At this point, there would be no sort of commitment at all. If, after a certain length of time, there is insuffiencient interest to proceed, the project will basically be scrapped at that point. If, however, there seems to be sufficient interest in the project, it will proceed to the next step.
The next step is where RTM will require a more firm commitment to actually purchase one of these rads should they be manufactured. This commitment will be in the form of a $25 NON-refundable deposit. The reason for the non-refundable deposit is NOT to help finance the purchase of the rads, but rather to demonstrate the person's COMMITMENT to purchase the rad once production has begun. We should point out that the rads will probably take 3-4 months to manufacture and ship to us, so we're making a major commitment ourselves. In any case, to prove that the deposit is not going to be used to finance any purchase, we've made arrangements to have one of the moderators of this board hold the deposits in trust on our behalf until the rads are available for purchase from us. I hope everyone can appreciate why we need some kind of commitment to purchase. We really can't afford to be stuck with 29 of the 30 rads we got made. If we get 10 people who say they'll buy a rad, we can't afford to have 6 of those change their minds a month later (after the manufacturer has started production and after we already paid in advance for the entire run).
Anyway, like I first mentioned, at this point we're not asking for a commitment (or deposit or anything else). At this initial stage, we just want a sort of "show of hands" by those who may be interested in such a product. Thanks in advance."

What is the estimated selling price for these? Will it be about the same as the turbo rad?

From Paul:
"We carry a lot of products made by this same manufacturer, and the quality is generally on the high end of the scale of what you get from China. For the initial Group Buy we're going to be selling these at a one-time special price of around $190-$195. After the initial Group Buy, they will become a regular product in the RTM lineup, and will sell for around the $240-$250 range."

I would definitely be interested. Picking up a second car when I get my tax return, so I'd like to get the cooling system upgraded before anything else. Where do I sign up?

From Paul @ RTM:
WE NEED A MINIMUM OF 12 PEOPLE COMMITTED TO MAKING A $25 NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT BY FEBRUARY 15 (details of this deposit in a previous post). If, by that date, we have the minimum number, anyone on the group buy list would have until FEBRUARY 25 to make their deposit.
