has anyone redlined 5th gear?? i'm just curious as to how fast that would be.... also... when you add HP to your car...will it only make it get to top speed faster..or will it raise the top speed???

N/A unless your going straight down a mountain its impossible to hit redline in 5th gear. the top speed doesnt change at all unless you have bigger rims and can get past the redline. i'm currently working on it with someone how to actually sneek past the redline. but i do believe we top out at 162 or so at fuel cut.

The govener on your car doesnt let it go past 130mph because of the tires... they have mods to take that off, but you have to buy Z-rated tires.

Actually, on the 2gnt Eclipse/Talon, there is no governor. None, nada. Zippo, el zero. As far as top speed, redline should check it at a hair over 150mph. I've seen about 6800rpm in 5th gear, so I wouldnt say its impossible N/A.

Yup like he said, no governor for the non-turbo's.

RS_Guy went 172 mph in his eclipse.

Unless he had a tranny swap with different gear ratios, I dont see how. Also, I know he had 17" wheels, so that will throw his speedo off. Another thing. At anything above 100+mph, your speedo will be off. Very off. Thats why I go by the tach. If his speedo read 170, he was probably doing about 155. Also, the speedo only reads to 170, how could he see it reading 172?

just curious...why is the speedo off after 100???

Actually SaberKahn it was a digital reading on RS_Guys car, he put up pics of it. I cant remember what it was on, i wanna say HKS Type 1 TT, but i think thats wrong... his tranny was stock as well.

476, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by SaberKhan, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Well, if his transmission was stock, then yeah, its wrong. Check your speed versus RPM and how it changes in each gear. Going by numbers, 7k will be at a hair over 150mph :) He wouldve had to have been doing 9k or more to reach 170+mph.

477, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by HadesOmega, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Dang that's fast hehe I"ve never gone past 130. Need some Z rated tires first hehe. THe HKS Type 1 reads in kilo per hour though. So he'd need to convert it using the tach. Hehe is there a way to switch it to MPH? That would be nice.

478, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by EvuLFleA, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Yeah it read out to be something like "279 KPH"
There is a webpage where you put in your gear rations and tire size and it will tell you what speed and rpm you will be at....And with Guy's setup it would have been true. I believe him 100%.

Just remember....100 KM/PH = 62 MPH so the easy conversion is to multiply kilo's by .62, so 279K would be roughly 172 MPH....

481, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by SaberKhan, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Ok, so the thing read 172mph. How the hell was he doing that on stock gear ratios? It would be impossible unless he was spinning his engine at 9k rpms.
|
482, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by RyaN95i4, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Wheatking (Dave, president of ASOG) topped his car out on a dyno. he has a 95 w/ 5 spd. redline in 5th gear was at 162mph. even if your making 900hp, redline in 5th gear is still gonna be 162mph, power doesnt change gear ratios, just how quickly you get thru em ;)
as for the 172, i dont doubt thats the reading he got, but i guarantee its wrong, unless he was spinning 8500+ rpms

I've taken mine up to 142 all stock with two people., franted it was down a hill, top mph on straightaway is 138 with just me in it.

487, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by RS_Guy, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Hey guys.. sorry to pick up on this sooooo late! It is possible. Sure my speedo could have been off, but I did have an A'PEXi SAFC (so DIGITAL RPM reading) and a Blitz MSTT so (DIGITAL km/h).
Using the exact dimensions of my rims & tires (overall diameter a tad smaller than stock 14" setup) and a stock tranny.
Yes, I did use high speed tires :-) and if you really wanna know, the car was lowered from the front only.
BTW sticking all the details into a proper gear calculator, will yield a max speed for us of about 173mph at 7500rpm in 5th gear. I couldn't believe it myself, so I did the maths too!
BTW both the SAFC and the MSTT have peak readings, and thats where I confirmed the readings from.
PPS Its freaky shit, be careful etc... I had 13" brakes
------ Car... Still waiting on it... Now, in Customs Department!!
4WD? Not unless all FOUR wheels put the power down! HINT: Put your average GSX on a car lift and step on the gas... ;-)

488, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by VX100, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
with stock diameter tires you'd top out at about 162mph, but if you use larger diameter tires, you lenghten the gear ratio and make the final drive ratio numerically smaller (from 3.94 to 1 to let's say 3.65 to 1). That would allow you to go at a higher top speed for the same engine RPM (IF you have the power to do it!)
speedos are off at 100+ mph because for our cars, they don't have to be accurate at that speed, we're not supposed to go that fast :) so it will error on the high side. would would want your speedo (for safety reasons ) to read 135 when your're going 150, or 165 when you're going 150? better to over-estimate speed so there is less chance to kill yourself, but I think once you're at 100, anything faster isn't going to make a difference, a crash at any of those speeds (unless you're ina BMW 5 or 7 series, or a mercedes on the autobahn) will turn your car into a metal accordian

489, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by RS_Guy, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Why 162mph max? My 17" Rims & Tires setup was just milimeters different in diameter to the stock setup...
Anyways here ya go:
Go here: http://pw1.netcom.com/~sgalaba/mph.htm (Thanks Fast420A!)
Type these numbers in:
Tire Width in (mm): 215 Aspect Ratio: 45 Rim Diameter in (inch): 17 Transmission Gear Ratio: 0.81 Differential Ratio (final drive): 3.94
And the results reads:
Engine Speed (RPM): 7500 Speed (MPH): 172.12
There ya go, and if ya really wanna get nit-picky, my car used to rev-limit at 7549rpm (according to the SAFC peak reading when I hit fuel cut in 1st gear).

I just though that's what is was with our gear ratios. Guess it could be something else.

491, RE: Has anyone redlined 5th gear??? Posted by RS_Guy, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Actually Todd, if you do go all out one day (I have faith in you :-) ), being NA, you can rev her up without much fear of damage to about 9500+rpm (ECU REV delimited of course).
A well-built/reinforced 420A, can rev to that without much problems.. :-)
Anyone care to calculate the speed he will be travelling at in 5th gear @ 9500rpm?
