39, Neon Vs. Eclipse
Posted by 1FastEclipse, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Because the Dodge Neon runs on the same engine as my Eclipse (420a) Would it be able to beat or equal me in a race? Just Curious

the neon will take you because its much lighter than eclipses

I 'THINK' it would beat you because it's a lighter car, not sure on that though. My friend ran a 16 flat w/ iceman and exhaust, and another friend ran 15.8 with the same mods, so they're pretty quick.

If you can't beat the neon in a race, you can always beat them in looks. X(

Don't the Neons also come with 2.25 inch piping and better exhaust then the stock Talons/Eclipses?? So that gives them some extra horses??

they are about 2200 lbs.. compared to our 29xx

read somewhere that neon's stock horsepower was projected at 150 instead of 140 like ours.

But then the reviews said that dodge was probably just being "generous" with the numbers.

And yea, neon's are lighter.. and i think the stock engine is built a little better/stronger.

But no way it beats an eclipse in looks.

(But be proud of those neon owners... they're your cousins after all.)

The previous generation Neons have the same diameter exhaust. The new 150 hp SOHC R/Ts are the only ones that have 2 1/4 inch exhausts (to help them get the extra HP with the SOHC). And I doubt their engines are stronger than ours stock. They are so similar there is no reason to think they would be stronger or weaker.

Yes, Neons are light, from about 2300 lbs for stripped down SOHC 2 door cars to up to 2650 lbs or so for new fully loaded 4 dr cars.

But, if they have auto trannies and are only lightly to moderately modded (and still NT) they are not very fast. The 2002 model is the first with a 4 speed auto. I drove a 3 speed Neon, it was not a pleasant experience :(

And, with a few mods you can take out R/T Neons (the 150 hp versions). I got to race one at the drag strip and beat one. But, everything being equal, the weight advantage has to be considered, and the 300 or so lbs. difference makes a difference at our HP levels.

does that go with a 95 neon to... i know the newer ones are fast but what about the older ones?

All I can tell you, is I can take both my friends with Neons, one with a 95 neon sport, one with a 98 neon coupe. Both I can beat. Neither of those cars have the 420a. Its pretty different looking and smaller it seems. The Neon RT's have the 420a's and those, I cant take.

ALL NEONs have the 420A. It is just that some have the DOHC and some have the SOHC Engines.

i beat an R/T neon with dual exhaust, body kit, and some other mods he had while i was stock. it was all top end racing though. up to 120 once on the way to Nopi

my mom had a 96 4 door neon. It would shake at anything between 80 and 90. The fastest I got it to was 90. I stopped cuz I thought it was gonna blow up.

Uh my 95 Neon 420A has 2 1/4" exhaust.

I'm pretty sure all Neons are not 420A. 420A means DOHC, SOHC got a different engine desination I think.

The Neons have one more advantage, smaller diameter wheels. With that it effectively gives them a high final drive ratio. Which gives them thge upper hand in acceleration and us in top end... especially with their 120 fuel cut off :-) just race past 120 and you will win! Unless they have a nice computer in there...

I'm pretty sure that that 10 hp gain the neon boasts is from a little different cam, right? or am i going crazy? but i'm pretty positive, i know i've heard people say that before though...

I thinks cam profiles are slightl;y different, but ECU programming I believe is one of the bigger culprits, the Neon's ECU does more timing adjustment even takes advantage of premium gas

Neons:

They all are 420A. It does not matter if they are SOHC or DOHC. It is a different head. They are all 420A. I repeated that in case someone is still not sure.

The RS eclipse weighs 2750, the HEAVIEST Neon weighs 2650 at the most, but that is rare. The ACR weighs in at 2400 or so. A fully stripped base Neon can drop in the 22xx range. They are ridiculously light.

Due to the extra weight of the Eclipse, the 420A is designed to provide more torque than the DOHC Neon 420A which is the power discrepencies. This is due to cam profile and ecu mappings.

SOHC-132hp DOHC-150 - Eclipse-140

I forget the torque numbers and the powerband spread.

Another facter is all SOHC neons have a 3.55 gear ratio and the RT/ACR have a 3.94 ratio which is what we have.

We fall in the middle. Faster than the SOHC and slower than the DOHC.The Neon will pull faster numbers with similar mods due to less weight. There are several 14sec all motor Neons and some in the 13's.

the fastest all motor neon is the CNNP sponsored 11 second neon driven by Scott Mohler who is actually from Frederick Maryland. I'm impressed.. since i only live like 20 minutes from there. I think they said he's the fastest all motor car in the IRDC.

I checked out CNNP's website for possible eclipse parts... but i don't think they give a damn about us 2g's. (cnnpracing.com)

I think the neons have more HP but less torque. I think it's pretty much even if they're both stock. I could be wrong though.
