Are you sure he's stock? Those 5sfe engine's are pritty tricky...those toyota guys can easily make homemade turbo systems by interchanging parts from the 3SGTE engines. I've seen some crazy sleepers especially those turbocharged camrys.
But if its stock for stock...it all goes down to driver skils.

yeah I know hes stock, i also know for sure he doesnt know how to launch his car off the line. Anyone got any suggestions except for dumping the clutch at about 4000 rpms?

don't dump the clutch, and keep wheel spin to a minimum

rev to 4000 and slip the clutch, better launch.

Umm, if your even a decent driver you should own it, they are slow as hell, my buddy has one, it's properly maintained, has some minor mods (intake, exhaust), and it's slow as hell.

hey man not to much to worry about, i've seen them run and they are not that impressive. Like all the guys say here it's 90% driver skill. Having a fast car can only get you so far if you can't drive it to its full potential. Wheel spin SUCKS! and wheel hop is even worse... oh you never really mentioned where your gonna race him street or track?? makes a big difference in technique of launch. The street is more forgiving IMO but the track can have wicked traction and snap your c-v joints like a twig. If your runnin on the street we can be a lil more specific on technique. I think either way your gonna take him to DSM school..

VW= The joy of driving DSM= The frustration of fixing
