2427, best way to launch
Posted by taloniized, Mar-07-03 01:46 PM
i'm racing my friend at the track tonight and he has a 1998 pontiac trans am. i think it's a 5.4L V-8 engine. what's the best way to launch our cars on street tires? i usually dump the clutch at 3,000RPM.

i like to run the rpms up to around 4800 or so and then feather the clutch out. I've found that I don't break my tires loose and I'm right in my powerband, then i hit second at redline and take off.

with a boosted car I do what the other guy said just feather it out make sure you are at full boost the whole time and or you will bog it. launching a turbo car seems to be a skill to some others just do it perfect the first time. Good luck!

Im not much on the late 90's TA's but i think the only v-8 option is the 5.7?

i meant the 5.7...anyways i lost, he ran a 14.5

I ran:
1/4 - 15.045
R/T - .600
MPH - 97.08

I only had time to run once though. maybe next time.

you couldn't beat at 14.5 with a T3/T4 turbo with FMIC and catback exhaust running 10 psi? I'd like to think your car would be lower..get a downpipe and straight pipe and AFC to tune your car.

How do you turbo guys drop the clutch above 2000rpm and not just stay there...:o. I don't see LSD's in your sigs. For me anything after 2k equals one leg pegs. :wary

i'll spin both tires if i step teh clutch out hard anywhere over 2K.

what was your 60ft time man? that's the import part. and probably the reason for you time.. cars tuning doesn't mean crap if you can't drive it to it's full potential.

and it looks like your friend can't either. a late 90's TA 'should' be able to run a MUCH better time with a good driver.

1 - don't drop the clutch

2 - modulate the throttle

Modulate - adjust... good term to me...

The Trans Am should be a mid 13 second car, you should have been beaten worse.

i think you also should of ran better also though. i saw another stage 2 hahn 2gnt at the track and he also couldnt break into the 14s. he was 15 flat the entire night. im not a pro but it said much mower on the hahn website, my best bet would be on the tuning and the driving.

intake, 2.5 exhaust w/gst muffler, pacesetter header, msd wires, ngk plugs, port and polish throttlebody, front and rear strut bars, 1.5' tenzo springs, 17" primax rims, kuhmo tires, leather interior, gsx sideskirts, BM shortshifter, GM fluid in trans...

Hey Demon,

Yea, Lonnie ran flat 15's, but also, it was on street tires spinning second all the way. He was running really rich the entire night too. I also think he's not used to launching the turbo'd cars, his 60's were 2.4 and up.

I think after time he'll be mid-14's at least.
