The reason you have to clutch and switch to neutral have the clutch released when you rev the car is the hole point... to get the internals of the tranny up to speed. If you were just to rev w/ the clutch pressed in your save your clutch but not the transmission, when correctly double clutching you heavily save wear on both the clutch and transmission when downshifting.
