92, FYI...Cheap Dynamat Alternative Posted by sd_eclipse, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Hi, All just wanted let you all know that McMasterCarr carries vibration dampening sheets very simlar to dynamat. The part number is "9709t18". It's $12.79 for 12 sq. ft. Yup that a buck and some change per sq ft. compared to dynamat which goes for about $24 for 4 sq ft. Anyhow, you can visit McMasterCarr online at wwww.mcmaster.com

the stuff in a can is a lot less effective and better suited for plastic panels and such. Basically what damping does is add mass to the things you put it on, so compare the mass of the spray to the mass of dynamat. Dynamat may be alittle more inefficient since it has to be adhered, but still.

Does this stuff work as about as good as the dynamat stuff? lets say i want to cover my trunk and at least the firewall & underdash to front seat area. how much would i need? should i use the mat or the spray for doors? thanks for any help at all.
also where can i get cheap spray dampner? and how much should i get for the application i am looking at?

the mcmaster stuff is identical to dyanamat. i think i used like 4 rolls total. for the door panels you want liquid, for the door skins you want mat. spray on you can use ruber undercarriage paint. you can also get this pastelike stuff from home depot/lowes called kool seal elastromic(sp) roof coating. it ccan be applied by brush or get a spray compressor

98, Better than dynamat... Posted by phrenzy, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Auralex Acoustics makes something called "sheetblok" which is pretty much dynamat on steroids. It's a little tricky to install into a car, but it packs some serious damping power. I have it installed in the walls of my home studio and it stops all sound and vibration in it's tracks. It is however a bit more expensive than dynamat.

well that sheetblock stuff is a sound barrier, not a damper, so it won't kill rattles but it will kill road noise real good. dynamat/htm is mainly a damper, although it also makes a good insulater(sound barrier)

Any good audio shop will have dynamat (get extreme dynamat which is better and lighter...)

you can get ice guard, works like dynamat but harder to apply or pink foam for insulation

does the pink foam make the car quieter if stuffed in panels? is that a sound dampener

yes, but it may trap moisture and cause corrosion so you have to be careful. In door panels, for example, where water can get in i recommend using some closed-cell foam, the stuff they use under vinyl car tops works good. that's an insulator, which is like a sound barrier. sound damper is something that adds mass to keep from rattling
