8846, Preventing Rims from being stolen?
Posted by jsupetran, Apr-20-04 06:04 AM
I guess this is a response to Ryans rims from being stolen and my paranioa...

Any ideas on any DEI systems out there and any reviews?

get an alarm with one or all of these. tilt sensor, shock sensor, proximity sensor. all would go off during the process of someone jacking your car up and taking your rims

greenjellybean had a really good idea in the other thread. when you are getting the tires mounted, have the mechanics put a piece of paper in each tire saying "if these wheels are being serveced for a customer whos name is not (insertname), they are stolen. please contact me immediatly at (phonenumber) and call the police". thats a pretty damn good idea if you ask me! oh, and btw you can put all kinds of stuff in tires. last time mine were changed on the eclipse they found a screwdriver in one tire and a 4" long bolt in another. wtf?!?!?

screwdriver???? that cant be good for the balance. writing the note and shoving it in the tire couldnt hurt at all though, good idea IMO. wheellocks are useless too btw, if someone wants those rims, they're gonna get them. and unless they have access to the machines necessary to mount/dismount tires they'll never find a note inside a tire.

i like the note idea
8861, RE: Preventing Rims from being stolen?
Posted by iamnotwhoiam, Apr-22-04 03:57 AM
another good place for the note would be on the inside of the center caps.. those caps have to come out when balanced and tire replacement... or you could engrave owner info on teh back of the wheel spokes or inside of tire.. just do it several places...

or you could place a tracking device on the rims/tires to track them if they were stolen.. like lojack or something. ;-)

or you could install bags and drop the car to the ground so its near to impossible to get to the wheels.. ;-)

Wouldnt it be cool if the alarm put a huge electrical current through the rimes or something else and shock the living shit outta the guy? :P

yeah but if you look at the back of the wheel you can see the back of the centercap. pointless... :shrug

i like the note or engraving idea. you could tape the note to the inside of the wheels with clear packing take so you dont have to worry about the note gettin wet or dirty. condensation builds up inside the tires sometimes depending on the climate where you live.

why are wheel locks so pointless? i wanna get a set, and i cant choose between mcgard or gorilla...

ive heard mcgard's are the easier to get off(from a guy that works at a tire place) and they only have 8 keysets...

but the gorillas look like you could use one of those universal sockets(with multiple metal pins inside) to get it off...

ive searched like a bitch but i really cant find anything definite.

They aren 100% worthless. It will stop a theif who is new to the, "jacking the rims of people who work their ass off while your too lazy to get a job to pay, for them game." But any experienced person who has stolen their fare share of rims are known to circumvant the wheel lock security, via getting a key replica, or using other advanced means. It is the same way with those steering wheel locks; it will stop a theif who is not familiar with them, but the professionals carry hydrogen (I think it is the chemical the immidiately freezes solid objects), then allows them to literrally break it.

The point is that one precaution is normally not enough. Wheel locks, an alarm with the right sensors, well-lit parking areas, and good luck are a good combo. It is not a 100% system (unless you park in Fort Nox), but the more you have the better in shape you are. Hell, even my alarm, proximity sensor, pager, shock sensor, pain generator, somewhat safe area college area, and fuel pump kill switch is no protection against a theif who really wants my car and gets a tow-truck.

Ive heard on the streets of miami they sometimes just wedge something in there and pry up and break the stud off. So no matter what you do it can come off.

i went with the mcgard wheel locks... after observing mcgard and gorilla both closely. the only way the mcgards are coming off is if you have a keyset.

i guess a little saftey is better than nothing

well, i kind had to think like a car theif.

on the gorillas, the key pattern is on the outside.

so you could probably use a universal socket OR put rubber hosing around the lock, then hammer on a socket over it. and twist it off pretty easy

the mcgard, is round on the outside

so as far as i can see, the only way your getting that off. is if you have a keyset. im sure some professional theives have the keysets. but imo, a theif is MUCH less likely to get the mcgard lock off.

the mcgard locks (part# 25257) were 30$ for 4 on summit.

Yeah good point. My excel rims need the supplied to key be taken off, but like you said, the pattern is on the outside. The Mcgard looks like the wheel locks that come with my old stock gs rims.

Atleast if the theif has to hammer out the Mcgard lokcs, then he'll set off my shock sensor :)

Its a viper 790 xv from eeeeeeeeeeeebay. I think it was about 200; install was another 150. I wasn't really happy with install cause they hid it under the steering well area and I should have asked to move it in the center console (I am going to undo the wires and hid it in a place I found which is perfect – email me if you wanna know).

It came stock with a shock sensor that has an adjustable sensitivity (it can feel different threshold's of impact, from needing a hard tap through the glass, to needing only a light tap to set it off). That was the basic stuff that came with it, but I added a siren with a backup battery, $30 (easy install; broke though – my fault though, I hid it in the bumper, and when I washed my car, water got in; should have placed it higher :( ). I also bought a pain generator; $14 (yet to be installed; it's an easy install, just splice into the siren power). I added a proximity sensor from ebay $20 (easy install), then a real alarm back up batter $40 (easy install).

I recommed just having the basic install and add the extras your self; the alarm place quoted me 150 extra for the backup battery and the pain generator. I am definitely sleeping better at night by taking these precautions. I also recommend getting your windows tinted if you have extra gauges and stuff.

The disadvantage of the mcgards with the pattern on the inside, is that I've heard it's easier to strip them. If you're not careful, you can easily strip if while trying to take it off. I think if you're really concerned, you should get 2 or 3 kinds of locks just to make it more of a pain to steal.

ive heard exactly the oposite, that they have no problem with stipping.... ive also been seeing them all over, stock rsx/350z/etc. most companies use mcgard for OEM locks...

My alarm's shock sensors works perfectly? What do you mean? When my TT is timing down, then my alarm can't turn on, but after the 30 secs, it's fine. :shrug I also have a proximity sensor just in case one sensor fails (buwhahah). :7

McGard rusts easily and tends to strip. I got two set of locks on. all rusted, matches my car :P

this is actually a pretty good idea.. get like at least two differnt syle locks for each wheel.. and if there is variation between keysets on the same brand get a different one for each wheel...

someone would really have to put some effort into steeling your rims if they had to go through 8 differnt locks..

wheel locks = worthless. you pound a 12-pt socket on it and voila its off. they even make forged bolt removers that u pound on, and throw an impact gun or socket wrench on it and it comes right off. wheel locks are only gonna stop some guy thats comin after your rims with a lug wrench, not somebody who seriously wants your rims. it doesnt matter what kind you get, they all get off. people bring their cars up to my work (belle tire) all the time cuz they fucked up their key and cant get the lock off. all we do is whip out the lock removers (which in reality are made for getting off stripped bolts), pound them on, and gun them off. piece of cake. basically, if someone wants to steal your wheels, they're going to steal them. Best bet is to get an alarm and park the car in a really visible area.

the mcgard locks are compltely smooth on the outside, theres nothing fo a socket to grip on. the only way ur getting them off is to drill a hole through it, or if you have a key.

Thats Right! I have a set of McGaurds on my stock RS 14inch cast iron rims and nobody has been able to steal these sweet ass rollers. :thumbsup
The only problem I've run into was once the key part in the lug key came out and when I put it back in it ended up getting jambed in the wrong angle. Had to get a new one for like $10. Not too bad. But yeah they also rust up a bit.

bolt removers will "make" something for them to grip onto.

Stunod.. Just playing.. But lets leave the note off on that if someone wants your rims bad enough they will do what they can. Just invest in multiple kinds of deturrents.
