8764, HELP on DEI 520T Backup Battery
Posted by jsupetran, Apr-09-04 07:43 PM
I get like 99% of the install but one part.

At the backup battery module, there is a grey wire that is suppose to supply power to the alarm's brain and the directions say to "connect the grey wire to the constant power wire on the control module main harness." So do I cut the 12V imput wire at the main harness, and connect the wire that leads to the brain with the grey wire OR should I not cut the wire in half, but instead shave and expose a peice of the 12V imput wire, and just connect the grey wire to it?

honestly, ive never hooked-up a backup battery before (i dont see the purpose of them), but you will definatly need to splice in, not cut. if you cut the constant power from the cars battery, the alarm will rely solely on the backup battery for power. by splicing in, you insure that the alarm will be powered by the source of least resistance (the cars battery) until that connection is severed, in which it will draw current from the backup.

you will want to splice in as close to the alarm brain as you can, and hide the brain VERY well. the problem w/ backup batteries is this: it works great if someone decides to cut the main battery wire in the engine compartment, but that almost never happens. in the cases that it DOES happen, the car must be tall enough for the thief to slip underneath and access the battery cable that way. they could possibly find a way to pop the hood, but that hardly ever happens.

the other option is for the thief to jimmy the door open, setting of the alarm. then they will immediatly look under the dash for the alarm wires, and start cutting away. if the backup battery is tapped-in under the dash, theres a good chance that the thief will cut that wire too. even if the only manage to cut the constant power wire from the cars battery, if the backup is wired in before that cut it will be useless. thats why you need to get the backup + wire as close to the brain as you can and hide the brain, you dont want a thief to be able to access that wire at all.

Nevermind; I've kinda figured it out :).

As for the brain, yeah, I am not too happy with the install of the alarm not that I reflect on the quality. They hid the brain under the steering wheel area between the panels (by the hood release area). Needless to say, I am thinking about relocating it somewhere else

i suggest relocating....my alarm brain used to be under there....made it a total PITA to do anything under the dash. really messy. its all been relocated now...i do suggest you use inconspicous wire to relocate.
