Ok, I like a lot of highs but a lot of bass, not nose rattling bass, but i wanna feel the boom still. So my friend suggested to me to get 2 12" JL w7's. She just had this put into her car. So i get in her car today to listen and it literally shook my eyeballs, way too much bass for me and that was with the bass turned all the way down. So, what I decided to do was to ask you guys who know more about this than I do, what do you suggest I buy that would give me some nice boom but still allow me to see straight while having nice highs as well? (suggestions for cd players are welcome as well, my baby cousin stuck some pennies in mine...) Thanks in advance.:)
ps: I like rap mostly but also love my 80's rock bands too LOL...

One 12" or maybe two mild 10"s.

well before she got these JL 12", she had 2 MTX 10's, and I REALLY liked the way they sounded. its was nice booming bass but not too overpowering. Im thinking I might just get those, but I wonder will it sound the same in a hatchback like in her Grand am gt?

i would suggest 1 12" in a sealed box, plus a 300ish watt amp. the jbl bp300.1 is a great class-d amp (easier on the electrical system) that costs about $120-$140, and will give you about 400ish watts into a mono 2ohm load. pair that up with a dual voice coil 12" like the alpine SWR-1241D (dual 4ohm voice coils so you can wire it to get the most out of that amp) in a 1 cubic foot box, plus an amp kit, and your looking at a great sounding system for around $400. if you want to adjust that budget down ill give you some better sub choices that are cheaper.

for the headunit, just go with whatever alpine/pioneer/clarion that fits your price range and impresses you. headunits are so sturdy and advanced now-a-days that it doesnt really matter what you get, lol. just buy the one that has the features and ergonomics that you are looking for.

edit: as far as comparng to the 2 10" MTXs, this will be well on par with them, if not exceeding them in low bass extention AND spl (if you decide to turn it up a bit, lol). hatchbacks have a much greater cabin gain (the coupling of waves to produce constructive interference) then cars w/ trunks, so its a great environment to work with.

BTW, i would suggest getting out to local audio stores, and even best buys/cicuit citys to listen and decide what qualities you ar elooking for. it will also help you familiarize yourself with what is out there. warning though: car audio salesmen can be pushy, just dont cave in, lol.

I have gone to best buy, mobile one, circut city, etc....i know what im looking for, but I cant find it. I want a cd player with a silver face and has either blue or purple words, i dont like that funky orange and green and stuff. I would prefer it have a remote and detachable face so i can lock it up or even be motorized flipface. I had a Kenwood in my mustang that did that. Ill look around online somemore and maybe see what you think about some that i find that i like.

no, you shouldnt need an external crossover, as alomost EVERY amp these days has one built in. if you are looking for a 24db/octive IASCA type setup, youll need an external, if not you are fine using the included one.

BTW, what is your current setup? just wondering.

Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in here.

Alpine makes a silver faced/blue letter head but I can't remember the number. Nice unit though. This would be my suggestion.


Alpine head unit.
Alpine 6.5" components in your front doors. (Type R)
Alpine 6.5" coaxials in the rear (type R), 6X9's if you have the pods. I hate 6X9's but go with whatever you have.
1 Alpine Type R 12" sub

Then get a 5 Channel Alpine V12 amplifier. It will run your satellite speakers and your sub, won't cost you that much, and you'll have a nice rounded system. Plus with the Alpine head units you have crossover points and such at your finger tips at the head unit so you don't have to listen up front then go in the rear to adjust stuff.


If you want to go balls to the wall get the Type X stuff, but they're rather pricey. Alpine makes a great top of the line ameteur consumer product that's just below the major expensive items that you would use for IASCA competition.

i also think panasonic had a silver/blue themed seiries a while back...but its been a while. i usually dont keep up w/ HUs because ive been happy w/ my old-ass clarion for a long time now, lol.

OR you can go with what I had in my truck. Impressed a whole lot of guys.

They can be insane or mild. I won a national champsionship title in sound quality with this setup.

2 jl w7s :eek I have one w7 and a jl 500/1 amp and i think that hits pretty damn hard. Very smooth and great sound quality. I have mb quart tweets on the dash, mb quart 6 1/2 compenents in the door and pioneer 6x9's in the back. All my highs are amped.

its all stock right now....dont laugh at me LOL. Thanks for your suggestions. I was thinking about just replacing the door speakers, the passen. one is blown anyhow, and then just putting the box in my trunk, nothings really in there anyways.
