8617, Help!! On Building a system
Posted by Sabot, Mar-30-04 02:38 PM
Ok, a couple of years ago I had a all out Kicker and Kenwood system just the HU and EQ was Kenwood so I spend alot of money, Then some low life stold my shit so I put all the stock audio back on. FFW to now the BASS bug bit me again. Now I want a good system but since I been out of the stereo game for so long I don't know whats good now this days whitout spending $400 for a speaker. So any help I will appreciate especially on what kind of speaker would best for the dollar.

I have two Alpine Type R 12's and it is the loudest system I have ever had. Speakers are fairly cheap (I got mine for about $125 apiece), but they are power hogs, and I have never heard them on any amps other than my 2 which were not cheap (Alpine MRD-M500, almost $300 apiece). Anybody have experience with these subs on lower wattage? I bet they would still hit good. Also, like ^^^ said above, JL makes some very good entry level speakers for the price. My old 12W0's were very loud on just a cheap Crunch amp.

I'm a big fan on the Alpine Type R's as well. I put one in my friends car with a real crappy amp and it sounded ok. If you just want bass then honestly, you can get that with almost any sub on the market being run by an amp that is close to the RMS power. When it comes to bass it's how much air can be moved and IMO, nobody does that better than Kicker right now with their square L7 subs, those things are real loud. If you want something to sound good then I would look at somethign along to the lines of a JL W3, they aren't the best but they can be picked up pretty cheap. I think Eclipse makes the best sub, that's what I have and I love it. It needs alot of power but with the right amp it hits real hard but still gives clear sound.
Do some research by going to local shops and listening to the stuff there, keep in mind it will not sound the same when it's in a car. Listen to other people's stuff and see what they are running. If you were into it before I'm sure you know what to look for, subs really have not changed a great deal, unless you want to pay a lot of money for the new technology, i.e JL W7
P.S- sorry, that might not make a whole lot of sense, I was just free writing it, just read it over a couple times

1 Kicker L7 12" sub on a 800 watt mono amp will rattle the mirror off your windshield with the right box :thumbsup

I myself have 10" Type R's not yet hooked up but they have high spl rating so they hit very nice for 10s. Alot of people seem to be going towards 10s nowadays because they are versatile and still pack some punch. Alot of people I know are getting 10s. Maybe its something to look into.

I have one type r alpine 10" in a "deathbox" in my eclipse and its sounds real nice... I am using a alpine amp that is pushing around 400 clear watts to it.

I am hoping to start making me a box for the back of my eclipse this weekend that will hold 3 10" type r subs.
