I just wired a switch to my hood lights (cobra eyes.. i like them so dont diss them.} Anyway. I would like to add other stuff onto this also, like some gauges and hardwire a radar detector to it. How many devices could I wire to this one source, and would it blow out on me?

i have my indiglo gauges, ac panel glows, 2 8'' neons, and plan on putting a radar detector and ipod dock on too.

in the instructions for every accessory you add, there sould be a listing of how much amperage the device draws. add up all the amp ratings for the accesories, and as long as they dont exceed the fuse rating on the cig lighter (i THINK its 10 amps, not sure though), you will be fine. even if you dont do this, you can always just add stuff til you blow the fuse, and then its time to back off, lol.

First guy, it's illegal to hook up those stupid lights to a switch. they have to be hooked up to the wire that kicks off your headlight relay. If they're on a switch and a cop wanted to be a dick he could. Oh, and they're gay, sorry, but they are.


To the second guy. Wire your indiglow gauges to the wire in your dr. side kick panel that kicks over your parking lamps. I think it's black with a green stripe, but not sure. You won't want to hook up your gauges to the same switch as neons and stuff cuz you can't shut that stuff off and still see your gauges.

let's say that they add up to more than 10 amps...is it possible to swap in a fuse that can handle more amps...such as a 30 amp fuse?

No, if you put a fuse in that's 30 amps and the original is 10 amps you are running the risk of starting a fire or blowing something. The reason the fuses are set at 10 amps is that whatever accessory they are running to is meant for less than 10 amps, so most of the time they run wiring that is designed for no more than 10 amps too. If you run 30 amps through wire rated for 10 amps it will seriously melt the insulation off and start a fire.


In other words, don't do it.

Or you could solve the problem by not installing the window pisser lights at all!!!

Or you can do this.

Buy a relay which will be powered by the cigarette light. Then run a wire to the battery, hook up that wire to the relay, then use the relay to power all of the accessories. This design is inspired by the fuel pump rewire mod; similar concept.

just run a new wire from the battery like he said ^^^. a lot of the stock wiring is made for limited current. just run a nice fat wire and hookup whatever your hear desires. (make sure to put an inline fuse close to the battery). that gives you constant power - just use some relays if you want certain devices only on at certain times.

i gotta do this eventually.. i have a lot tapped off the constant from the ignition but i can tell it's starting to over load it... alarm, interior lighting, power windows (w/o key), radio (w/o key), power antenna, siren/horn play switches... :P
