7731, M/T neutral saftey remote start trouble Posted by Pyroman415, Dec-03-03 01:43 PM
i read on the forums how to install a remote start on my M/T 98 talon and it all worked great except for the neutral saftey switch. i hooked it up to my clutch wires and i think it burnt out the magnetic switch and it did the same when i hooked a new one up to the starter wire. i tried open and closed switches and after i started the car a few times the switches no longer work. they are the magnetic switches from radio shack. could anyone tell me what im doing wrong and how to fix it? and is there anyother way to make a neutral saftey switch? thanks for your help!

To bypass the clutch switch, just unplug the wire harness from the switch, right at the clutch pedal. I then used 2 DEI mercury switches for safety. One switch is on the E brake lever, under the console. This lets the Remote start only work if the lever is up. Then, I have the other mercury switch on my shifter. If you take out the center console, and look at the shifter rod, there is a hole already in the shifter lever, and i used a small nut and bolt to mount the merc switch to that. So, if the shifter is forward in any gear, it tilts the mercury, and no start. The merc bubble makes no contact when the shifter is in Neutral, and then the RS works. I have a DEI RS/Alarm, and there are a few wires on it, that either need a ground, or if a wire sees a ground, will keep the RS from starting the car. I just used the merc switches to either provide the needed ground, or send the ground to these wires. I can dig up the pics of how i mounted the switches if you like.
K here they are:

The mercury tilt switches will be easier to install, but I used a magnetic window switch so that it can operate when the car is parked on a hill (and doesn't happen to be level if the shifter is in gear). It took a long time postioning it so that it works at the right times.
I'll try to get some pics up.

The merc switches I used can be had at any DEI alarm/remote start dealer in your town. There should be lots of DEI dealers where you are at. Best Buy would be an example..try the smaller shops, you may get lucky and get them dirt cheap..
