hey guys,

I'm installing an alpine HU in place of my Infinity stock system. I know how to do most of it, I think, except I was searching and it said that to use the dash speakers w/o burning up the radio I Had to install them "in series" with the fronts. How do I do this?

Alright, how to explain series....hmmmm. Well here it goes. You hook the positive speaker wire to the positive terminal of speaker #1 then you wire the negative of speaker #1 to the positive of speaker #2 and last but not least you wire the negative of speaker #2 to the negative speaker wire. Hope you understand all of that. Email me if you need more info.

Also, remember, wiring speakers in series will double the ohm load. SO if you have two 4ohm speakers, you would produce an 8ohm load. Which means the speakers will only draw half of the rated 4ohm power from the amp, which in turn means you need a bigger amp to get the same amount of power of a 4ohm set up. I only wire speakers in series if I have 2ohm speakers. Sounds confusing but it is very simple.:thumbsup

so by putting them in series, I increase the ohm load? I thought you were supposed to put them in series to decrease the load on teh head unit...they're the stock dash and door speakers, so I think they're 4ohm, but dont' quote me on that. I actually just bought a cable to not bypass the stock amp for my HU...hopefully it'll bring the dash back to life, otherwise aftermarket amp and series here we come...

actually, you have it backwards. running speakers in series reduces the resistance, running them in parallel increases it. i *think* that the stock speakers are run in a parallel fashion, and i also *think* that the door speakers are 4 ohms, while the dash ones are 8 ohms, resulting in a 6 ohm final impedece, wich is fine for any headunit. i could be wrong, but i would imagine that the stock headunit would be far under-enginered from any aftermarket unit, so your new headunit should hold up fine. you also have to take into consideration that the dash speakers are passivly high-passed, and that means that they are barely posing any strain on the amplification system (it takes far less power to produce higher frequencies than it does for lower ones).

i read it too fast and mistook "resistance" for "ohm load". wiring speakers in series increses the ohm load, and decreases resistance. decreasing resistance decreases the load on the head-unit. ;)

im dumb. :P
