6780, False Floor... Posted by PemDSM, Jul-30-03 10:41 AM
How many of you audiophiles have attempted the "false floor" thing in your car? I did it earlier this week. I'm only running 1 10" in there but it really hammers, and sounds good!! It's surprising how much room there is down under there if you remove your spare tire and all the mounting brackets. I think there would be enough room for a pair of 12's!! Anyone else done this, and what are you running??

I bought my Talon with 32k on it. I pulled the spare tire rack out at 32,500 and I'm currently at 145K.
I think spare tires are overrated, but I may eat my words some day!
Have fun and rip it out. You can do a much better install in the spare tire well, especially if you are good with fiberglass!

Here is a pic of mine when it was about 60% complete. I fiberglassed the wheel well and then used MDF on the top... it was really easy.

also feel free to look at some of my other pics....

It's simple to do the false floor thing. Actually, for a pattern, all you really need to use is your stock trunk liner. All I did was trace it out on a big piece of cardboard, and keep trimming until I got a good fit. I think the hardest part was removing the brackets and stuff for the spare tire.

do you just lay the MDF on top of the fiberglass or do u attach the MDF to the fiberglass floor? i have always wondered about that. later "Z"

What I did was all around the opening of the spare tire well, when I fiberglassed it,I left a kind of "hump" about 1" wide, and 1 " high for the floor to sit on. I sanded the top to a smooth flat surface, so the floor would sit flat on top of it. Kind of like a "fiberglass gasket". Once the floor was all set to go in, and before I mounted the speakers in it, all round the outside of the "fiberglass gasket" on the floor part of the trunk, I sprayed a layer of expanda foam. Then I laid the floor down, and bolted it in place before the foam expanded. Then when the foam expanded, it filled in any gaps, and sealded the enclosure thoroughly. A friend of mine just bought a Talon. It's going into the shop for paint anb body work, but when it's out, he wants me to do the false floor in his car with four tens. I'm going to take pictures, and maybe do a writeup then. I should have done it when I did mine, but no digi cam. He has one I can use, so I'll be all set.

I have pics of the steps required to remove the spare tire brackets up here:

Would four 10's really have enough space in the spare tire well?

The way I'm installing the four tens, there will be enough room. I'm going to raise the false floor by eight inches. It will still look pretty much the same, just a little higher. The hard part will be fixing all the buzzes and rattles after it's been playing for a week or so. I hate when you hear a car with a great stereo go by, and then once its passed, all you hear is buzz, buzz, rattle, rattle.
