What do you guys set your low pass filter on your amp at? I have mine at 80 Hz. I was thinking, if I set it lower, would my bass be a bit more punchy because it wouldn't play the higher frequencies? Sometimes the bass gets a bit drony and annoying...I also have my Pioneer head unit subwoofer out set at 80 hz +3 so it boosts the signal around 80 hz. The only other choices on the head unit are 50 hz, and 125 hz. My amp has a variable LPF so I'm trying to decide what to set that at?

Mine is built in the the Alpine amp at 80Hz. My old amp I used to have set at 150Hz. I like this setting much better.

yeah i believe that the 80hz is the normal setting on most lpf's and depending on what size subs you have you can set it lower to get a deeper bass of the lower notes.. for 12s you can do this, but it doesnt have the same effect on 10s.. if you find yourself having too much bass i would recomend getting an eq to control your bass/subs.. i did and it has helped alot.. but yeah you are correct to say that if you set it at a lower hz then you will get the lower notes and it tends to have better bass response that way..

yessim, the bigger the sub, the lower the frequencies should go. i have a 15 so the filter is down. but in my experience, its better to play with the amp settings than the head unit settings. you get much better tunning when you play with the amps crossover. mine is set a little lower than 80. but if you are running 10s, dont turn the filter too low, cus they will not sound as good, because they are not made for that low of a bass hit.

the filter is just a cutoff point. 80 is a standard, but the bass gets more directional and you can tell it's coming from the rear. kick it down to 70 or 60 and you'll get more upfront bass, and alot clearer low bass. it won't be as loud because it won't be distorted, but you just want it loud you probably don't like what I have to say....

Koolade, I think I want what you're talking about. Basically, the drony bass annoys me and I want it clearer and just to feel more punchy. So what would you recommend I set it at with 2 RF Punch 10" subs. Some people said not to set it too low with 10's...

I have my low pass set at 80hz and high pass at 120hz. My system doesn't like 120/120 low/high. I tried 80/80hz low high but my seperates didn't like it too much. I also tried the sub crossed over at 60hz but I lost too much bass. I have but one JL 10" driven by 200W rms.

I have mine set at or around 100HZ. I don't have much mid bass, so i can get away with a higher setting. Koolaid is right, its only a cut-off frequency. If you turn it down, its not going to make it deeper or anything, it will cut out higer freq of bass, which is usually the boomy bass. Its more directional, so the boom is easily noticed comeing from the back. If you want everyting to blend with out the boominess, get a good set of mid bass speakers, and cross over sub at 80 and lower, and things will sound great!

Thanks, basically I want to get rid of the boomyness, so I guess I should set my LPF a little bit lower than 80 hz. I basically want it to be more punchy rather than long sustained mid-bass notes that get annoying...

your boominess could also be caused by the crunch amp...if you don't have enough power, the clipping can sound like that. try droppin the xover point right around 65-70. also, your subs are in a sparetire well enclosure right? try stuffing it with R13 fiberglass insulation, or just use fiberfill(if you can find it)

Thanks guys, I set the LPF down to about 72 or so now, and I think it sounds a lot better. Got rid of most of the annoying drony bass. When I set teh LPF too low, I had very little bass. Hey Koolade, instead of using polyfill, can I just put more layers of fiberglass to make the volume in the box smaller? Since I have access to free fiberglass and resin, I figured that would be the cheapest way?

Polyfill doesnt make the box smaller, it makes the subs think the box is bigger.

I'd fiberglass it anyways....it'll seal er right up too. if you want to remove volume, just add a couple 2x4 peices. R13 insulation is only like 8 bucks for a huge roll though....
