6275, Wohoo! Radio on till door opens Posted by Squid, May-31-03 01:10 PM
The only thing I like about my mother’s Malibu is that the Head Unit stay on till I open the driver's door, even if I pull the key from the ignition.
I found a wiring diagram at the12volt.com http://www.the12volt.com/relays/page5.asp#drto I just finished wiring it into the car and it works just like I wanted it to. The Head Unit comes on when I turn the key to acc or turn the car on, regardless of weather the driver’s door is open. But once I’ve pulled the key from the ignition the head unit stays on till I open the driver’s door. Once it’s off it stays off like normal.
For anyone that’s interested in doing the same here’s what I did.
List of ingredients: 1 30A Automotive SPST (can also use SPDT) Relay $6 2 10A (can use down to 1A these two only need to handle enough current to run the Automotive Relay),12V SPDT Relay $4 ea. 1 Project box (I used a 3-3/16x2-1/8x1-3/8" project box from RadioShack) $4
Total: $18
You’ll also need wire (the more colors the better, the box will have 5 wires sticking out of it: always on 12V, ground, door trigger, acc, head unit power), connectors, epoxy, double sided foam tape, and electrical tape. Here’s my relays wired together and epoxied to the bottom of the project box:

I placed the box on a shelf that is underneath the head unit using double-sided foam. I ran a new power source from the battery with a 10A fuse to the box. I connected to the orange wire that goes to the door trigger, theirs is also a red wire there, but that is the one that turn the lights on and I’m not sure if it’s wired to the door trigger on the passenger’s side which would shut the radio off if either door is open. Then connected the rest of the wires and put everything back.

If you really want to get tricky, pick up a timer-relay from Circuit City. (DEI makes the relay, so tell the CC guy to order one for ya)
Using a timer relay will keep the radio playing for a programmed time and then turn it off. Opening the doors will also turn off the radio. When you use the timer relay, it will make the radio turn-off function just like the windows. When you take out the key, you can still roll the window down for 30 seconds. If you open the door or go beyond the 30 seconds, the power is killed to the power window module.
Have fun and let me know if anyone does this!

The12Volt does have a ton of good info.
The timed relay could be a pain though. What if what I'm listening to is longer than 30 sec.
