fellas.... i have a problem...

i have hard wired my radar detector and my cell phone charger into my car's electrical system.

everything was working perfectly, at least the radar detector (havent tried the cell phone jack yet)... i didnt have an on/off switch on my old setup, so i would have to manually turn the detector on and off.

because of this, i went to da zone, and picked up a relay box/switch that has 4 spots on it. wired up the radar and the cell phone charger, and put power to it.

the radar detector made some funny noise, but didnt turn on, i kept messin w/it, and then my brand new cobra radar detector started smoking....

i burnt it up, and i dont want to even try my cell phone charger cuz i dont want to spend $ on a new phone.

my basic questions are, why did this happen after putting in the relay box???

everything is runnin off of 12 volts
i cut the cig. lighter male part off, and spliced into the wires, and ran those wires to my relay box. i did the same w/my radar decector power as well.....

power is good, ground is good, and i do have a fuse between the battery and the relay box.

please gimme some help here

thanks

hit me at seangordon@hotmail.com if you have any extra info that can help me...

thanks

The only thing I can think of is if the radar detector uses a different voltage. By that I mean the cig plug could have had a transformer in it stepping down the voltage the detector received. Did you previously have this very same detector hard wired into your previous car? Crack open the cig plug you cut off and if you see anything other than two wires soldered onto the plug connectors then you found your problem.

Yeah it either uses less than 12 volts, or you mixed up the (+) and (-) wires...thats bad

Usually radar detector runs on 12V. My guess would be that you hooked up the relay wrong and ran your +12 into the ground end.

Uhm....why didn't you find the switched power at your radio or your ignition? That's what I did and I've never had a problem. Now your SRT-4 may be different, but I don't think it won't have a switched power at those two locations :)

if your sure its 12v then yea you mixed up polarity ( +,-) if you didnt leave it on for too long it might still work even tho it burnt a lil. if your not sure that its 12v what you wanna do is go to radioshack and pick up a cig lighter extension then cut off the plug end end wire it to your switch then plug in your radar
