I have a in dash Jensen MP3 Player with Kenwood speakers hooked up. They all work very well but I added an amp (300 watts) and two 10" subwoofers.

The problem....the volume for some unexplained reason will start to incerase for no reason, randomly....will max out and then let me turn the volume down again.

why?

Nope...

Cant be stuck/..when I try to turn it down the volume still increases. and it will do it for no apparaent reason whenm driving down the road. The comtrols are eletronic too.... Thinking maybe feedback from the amp

its a stuck button, im 99% sure of it. it doesnt matter if you try to turn it down at the same time, the headunit just wont respond to that. hold down the volume up button and then depress the volume down button at the same time, youll see what im saying.

also, it might not actually be the "button", but the mechanical part (or even electrical part) underneath it. i would suggest using some compressed air or similar first, and then a disasmebly and cleaning of the faceplate next if that doesnt work.

edit: if there is some grime under the button, the slightest jolt coult cause it to stick, so thats why it happens randomly when you are driving.

I'll take look at that but I doubt it since the button is a 4 way circular push button. It also wont do it when the car isnt moving..which might lead me to belive that it wint since there isnt any jarring..

I still think it has something to do with the ground though...I have whine in my speakers too when the car is running...the faster the motor the faster the whine goes....

I already moved the ground on the radio which didnt help

Any other thoughts...

I'll look at the face tonight and post my results...maybe soneone else had a similar problem

What speakers are giving you the whine? Are you only using the amp to power the subs? I have seen bad grounds cause some pretty strange stuff in the past. Try disconnecting the ground wire. Most stereos can use the antenna as a ground (although I really don't recommend this). Try to trouble shoot to isolate the problem. If the problem started when you added the amp, disconnect the amp and see what happens. If it stops, you know where the problem lies. :thumbsup

Yeah...thats pretty much when it started witht he volume problem..the whine was there before just not as bad. The amp are only running my subs.

I am going to pull the fuse from under the hood for the power to the amp and disconnect the RCA cables too jus to see how that reacts..

If the power cables are to close/next to the RCA cables will that cause problems? I can think of a place where they are running side by side to the speakers.

Ok...

Took the fuse out of the in line fuse for the amp under the hood....that didn't change anything so I dont think it is the amp (?)

Planning on taking the face plate off tonight to check the button since I got a can of air to clean it.

Any other ideas before I torch the car? x(

Yes, power and RCA's together will cause noise. You should always run then down seperate sides of the vehicle. As far as the whine is concerned, it is probably just the ground of the HU. Just keep playing around with it. Now you said the volume will go up even if you don't touch it? Or do you attempt to raise the volume and it keeps going? If it does it with out you touching it, then something is wrong with it. No offense, but jensen isn't the best brand of HU. I would (if the $$$ is available) replace it with an Alpine deck. I picked up an Alpine deck for my GF for $50 from a shop (display model). Keep me posted.:thumbsup
