Ok, new problem, I have a kicker 800.4 amp, I am running it at what should be a stable load and nothing is shorted, however after about an hour of play at a fairly loud playing, it shuts off due to overheating (I think, the amp body is wicked hot). Right now I have it mounted on the back on my rear fold down seat and I have the trunk lid on. Any ideas on how I can keep this amp cool? I don't want to have to build and amp rack with fans because I have no room for it.

maybe lowering the gains... less strain=less heat... thats just a guess, im no audio expert

What speakers is the amp driving?

My first thought...wrong ohm load to the amplifier. If the amp overheats that fast, the ohm load my be off or you have a blown speaker.

i have a kicker 800.2 and it does the same. mine cuts out when i hit bass for too long and it drains the battery. Its pushing a 15" kicker L7. it sucks. Im going JL now.

what size wire are you using from the batt to the amp?? I have known amps to heatup quickly due to small gauge wires. I run 2 Sony 1000watt amps, and 1 Sony 600watt amp without any problems now that I upgraded to 0 gauge wires..those wires are really thick, more current less strain.

kicker 800.4 running two jl subs at 2ohms on the rear channels and two four speakers on the front channels. Power and ground is 4 gauge fused at 100 amps.

The 800.4 is not stable to 2 ohms mono. Are you running the rear channel in mono or stereo? Judging from the ohm load you provided us, I'm guessing that you have the subs in mono.

With that in mind, run the subs in stereo and your overheating problem should go away. In addition, you may need to remount the amplifier, so that you may get proper cooling. Adding a fan may also help.

yes, it is not stable at 2 ohms bridged, but i have two ohms per rear channel, 4 ohms per front channel, this is within spec. So why does it get so hot so fast.

2ohm stereo may be within specs, but it is still going to cause the amp to heat up quicker. Adjust the gains and don't crank it as much and cooling fans might be your only solution!:thumbsup

i put a small like 3" fan to blow over my amp that overheated because it was bridged and now it never kicks off and the fan is really small

I had the same problem...fan took care of it
