ok so say this is a male RCA wire:

when i plug the wire into the amp, it only works when ONLY the - part is touching...as soon as the ( touches the sub stops working....
anyone every see this before, how do i correct it?

couple questions:
what does the rest of the system do when its plugged in fully? does the headunit remain powered on and sending a signal to the rest of the system? is there any noise noticable?
somthing is definatly not right with that, lol. sounds like a problem in either the amp or the headunit. i would suggest just leaving it unplugged until someone figures it out.

It could be a bad set of RCA's, but I doubt it. Like SPL said, it might be the amp or head unit... something shorting out inside. How is your ground on the amp and radio? Check that too.
