i have the following system in my 240SX (tiny tiny trunk)

6 1/2 Component fronts
6 1/2 Coaxial in the back

and i just bought a 12" RF SVC (200 RMS @ 4 Ohms) SUB, i bought the sealed enclosure from Best Buy (it was the "recommended" one,Class 1)

What are my options on amps? since it's 4 ohms,

can i buy a 2 channel amp and drive it with a single channel at 4 ohms?

If i buy a 2 channel amp, do i have to buy another sub for the other channel?

or do i buy a MONO amp thats rated at 4 ohms?

Yes. As long as the amp is bridgeable (sp?) and 2 ohm stable.

No. Not necessarily. See above. Assuming your amp can be bridged, follow the amp instructions to use the + from one channel and the - from the other channel hooked to 1 sub.

Either way. Depends on the $$ you want to spend and the quality of sound you want. Typically you will get what you pay for. Make sure to check the RMS power output and disregard the peak output.

PS. This is all assuming you have a SVC(single voice coil) 4 ohm sub. If it's DVC, then the answers are somewhat different.

As long as you have a quality amp, there should not be an ill-effect on the speaker from running it at 2 ohms. When you go from 4 ohms to 2 ohms.. you are getting more power from the amp b/c there is less resistance to the power coming from it. As long as you have a good amp and the wattage sent with 2ohms isn't beyond your sub's capability it should not do anything to it. Amps will always have cleaner power and more longevity at higher ohms though.

I know with a DVC-4ohm sub you can run it at 2 and 4 ohms. If your sub is a SVC-4 ohm, you might not be able to run it at 2ohms. I am not sure though.

Edit: Ok I just did some checking.. with the Single Voice Coil.. if it is 4ohms (8ohm/4ohm are the most common) it will present a 4 ohm load to the system. Maybe I am unaware of the dynamics and sending it 2 ohms is possible.. but I think 4 ohms is the way you'd have to go.

when you bridge a 2 channel amp, each channel "sees" half of the total impedence presented (in theory), so a 4ohm sub will present a 4ohm mono load, or the equivilent of 2ohms per channel. i cant think of any mass produced 2 channel amps on the market that cannot be wired in this fashion. what that means is you can literally go out and buy ANY mono or 2 channel amp you want when you have a single 4ohm setup. just pick somthing reliable and with a good amount of power, plus all the features you want (crossovers, eqs, etc..etc..).
