5352, custom radar detector install question Posted by DR1665, Feb-16-03 06:07 PM
Anybody out there relocate the diplay on their radar detector? I want to mount the unit (uh huh huh, I said "unit") behind the rearview mirror, but run some shielded multi-conductor to the display panel up under the ledge over the gauges. I have an older Whistler 1570 which I'm no longer concerned about warranty issues, but I would like to avoid frying the unit.:P In taking it apart, I noticed about 11 solder locations on the back of the display. Do you think I need any resistors or anything? Would the signal still travel from the mirror, across the windshield, down the pillar and over to the gauges effectively? Am I gonna toast this thing? Any input would kick a lot of ass! TIA!:7

ive relocated the display of headunits in the past, and i can say for sure that the signal wont have a problem traveling that far. if your good with a soldering iron (use a VERY LOW WATTAGE!!!), you just need to desolder the connections on the unit and solder in the new cable, no other resistors, etc. need to be used.
if you do a search on yahoo, google, or whatever, youll probably find a few sites from people who have done this before. i remember there was a car that won a lot of trophies in IASCA a few years back that had the display mounted in his steering wheel, and he had a writeup on his web page on how to do it. i cant remember his name though, sorry.

Werd... that's kinda cool I'll have to look into something like this. I have an old radar detector I never use cause I don't have the mounting bracket for it. My sister was gonna throw it away but I saved it's life. :D
