5327, Need to wire an FM modulator and Power/ACC wires off my factory unit in the truck

Since the ford forums I go to aint responding (low traffic I guess) I am going to ask you guys

I have an fm modulator to where if u change it to station 89.7 it will pick up audio off my dvd player. Then I need to wire my lcd screen for power as well. I need 2 acc wires, one constant, one thats on only when the accesories come on.

I don't think the factory radio with hidden 6 disc changer has rca out puts on the back, I havent opened it up yet, but I am ASSUMING I can wire the FM modulator off the back? If so, theres my rca outs I guess, right? Just making sure before I open all this shit.

thanks

Not exactly sure how FM modulators wire up, but I am assuming from the way you describe it that it wires up to the speaker outputs? Of course you can do that. One thing to keep in mind is does your truck have a factory amp? That may make things tricky, I know my 94 Ford Probe GT I used to have had a factory amp. Your best bet is to try to find some sort of electrical manual for your truck. That may be hard since your truck is pretty new, but I am guessing they used the radio thats in your truck in other models too.

This may not be much help but not having much experience with FM modulators and not being able to see how it hooks up makes it hard for me to say much.

so what exactly are you trying to do? in the first part of the post you said you wanted to get the audio from the dvd player "in" the headunit, so that it could then be amplified and sent to the speakers. then at the end you mentioned taking the audio "out" of the headunit (via RCAs etc.), but you never mentioned where you wanted that signal to go.

an FM modulator works by introducing a signal in on a carrier band of xx.x frequency. the point is to get a signal into a headunit that does not have any other form of input on it. you wouldnt use an mf modulator to extract the signal from the headunit for anything, youd use a line level adapter (converst the speaker wire signal to an RCA output).

as far as wiring info, i have no clue. im sure there are a number of sites you could go to to find thye appropriate wires to tap into ( www.installdr.com might have them). you also mentioned somthing wlse confusing here as well. you said you need 2 acc. wires, one constant wire, and one accesory wire....so do you need 3 acc. wires and one constant, or did you mean somthing else?

sorry here goes...

3 wires for powering the fm modulator:

1 yellow : constant power
1 red : acc power
1 black : ground

I need to bring the rca audio OUT into the fm modulator so the modulator can then give me my audio signal on station 89.7fm into the back of the stock headunit.

The video OUT is going into my lcd screen rca from the dvd unit to the screen. The audio OUT is going to the headunit somehow via fm modulator. Make sense?

thanks!

yellow - wire to battery or fused location w/ constant power (maybe ignition)
acc - I usually just use the cigarette lighter power (assuming it's not always on)
ground - find some good bare metal or you can use your cig lighter ground as well.

I think that's all you really asked. You had it right about the RCA's. Run the outs from the DVD to the fm mod and then tune your radio to 89.7 or whatever and you should have it set up.

Good I just wanted to make sure before I attempted to rip this factory unit out and take a look. i also have to bypass the antenna on the radio and it goes in the fm modulator antenna in and the the fm modulator's antenna out then goes into the headunit's.

This is temporary until I get my Kenwood Exelleon DVD indash 6" :)

Oh ok... thats what I was thinking but the way you described didn't mke sense to me. There is no audio output from the FM modulator except for the FM signal which your radio will pick up over the radio. The rest is cake, just power and grounds.

okay man, I just put my CD changer in so I gotchya, the wiring on 2003 fords is weird, I had to use a voltmeter to find out the wires, I hooked up the constant on to my cig lighter, the switched power (antenna) to the wire thats all the way to the right and on the top of the wiring harness in the back of the radio if you're looking at it like you just took it out, ground I used from the cig lighter as well, I'll see if I cant take any pics for ya, oh and the 2003's dont have a key out to pull the radio with so you have to get one for the older models, bend it out (it's in a U shape) and just use 1 end, you'll see what I'm talking about, that could just be mine cuz of the STX package radio, but it should be the same

Alright, the wording you used is really confusing. The FM modulator basically taps into the antenna and that's it for signal. (No RCA's used here for audio) You can tap the constant and acc off of the HU but not quite sure which wire is which. Pretty straight forward.

I got it. I went to installdr.com like that one dood said and heres what i got for the 2001-2003 fords...

on my factory wiring harness....
Pin "N" is black...ground wire
Pin "O" is red...+12v ignition wire
Pin "P" is yellow...+12 volt battery wire

Easy. Thanks!

That's pretty amazing that it was that simple! Those are the same colors that aftermarket HU's use! LOL Most of the time it's like green and brown wires for power!
