5194, question for manyyy (or other infinity sound owners) Posted by SPL_Eclipse, Jan-31-03 05:37 PM
hi, i just noticed you replied to a question about someones infinity sound system, and i was wondering a few things.
1) does the deck have a proprietary (cant spell) cable that sends the audio signal to the amp? in other words, the deck contains all the power connections, the antenna input, and another cable to transfer the signal to the amp, right?
2) you mentioned in the other post that another harness for the amp should be under the seat, even in vehicals not originally equiped with the infinity system. what all does this cable carry? just power (+ and -)?
3) how is the output of the amp routed to the speakers? if one were to upgrade to the infinity system, is there a way to run new speaker wire from the amp to the speakers? or is there another proprietary cable that serves this function?
4) how does the amp recieve a remote turn-on signal? through the pre-wired harness, through the cable via the headunit, or some other way?
im just wondering the way in which the stock infinity system functions because there are many people that want to know how to replace it, etc. and im not too familiar with it. any knowledge you could impart would lend greatly to the better audio knowledge of the 2gnt community. stars to those wou can help. ;)
TIA
edit: fixed some spelling stuff.

Well I'm certainly no expert in this field, but I'll try my best to help out.
1) does the deck have a proprietary (cant spell) cable that sends the audio signal to the amp? in other words, the deck contains all the power connections, the antenna input, and another cable to transfer the signal to the amp, right?
Yes, it's entirely proprietary and the deck, amp, and speakers are meant to work together as one system. There is the regular harness that plugs into the deck and leads to somewhere behind the dash. On the bottom of the passenger seat there's another harness that goes to the amp. I assume this is the same cable. There's also a black cable that connects the amp directly to the deck.
2) you mentioned in the other post that another harness for the amp should be under the seat, even in vehicals not originally equiped with the infinity system. what all does this cable carry? just power (+ and -)?
It carries the audio channels and + and -. The black cable that hooks up to the amp also carries audio channels and + and -. Which cable is to and which if fro, I don't know.
3) how is the output of the amp routed to the speakers? if one were to upgrade to the infinity system, is there a way to run new speaker wire from the amp to the speakers? or is there another proprietary cable that serves this function?
It would be a huge headache trying to untangle that spider web of wires behind the dash to find where they go. The best bet to run new speaker wire would be to follow the wires from the speakers and go back from there.
4) how does the amp recieve a remote turn-on signal? through the pre-wired harness, through the cable via the headunit, or some other way?
I'll have to unplug it and play with a multimeter later on to find that out. ;) I do know, however, that both the pre-wired harness AND the black cable carry + and - signals.
If any one wants to add to this, or refute any incorrect info, I'd appreciate it too. Hope it helps.

thanks so much! :) :)
every now and then someone comes along with a question about upgrading from/to an infinity system, and no one has really had any expertise with the system to help much. your info will be very helpfull later down the road.

I'll get a sheet and try to copy it that says the pin layout of the Infinity din cable. I know that the cable sends out a low level audio signal and reference ground, I just don't remember the pins. As far as I know, if you want to upgrade from factory to the Infinity system, you would need the amp, the Infinity H/U, and the din cable for the amp. You would need to run the cable to under the pass seat and plug everything in (obviously). I'm not 100% sure on this, as I have never upgraded a factory system like this, but I think this would work. I just rewire and bypass the amp when I put in a new H/U in customer's cars.

that would be great!
when you replace the infinity headunit w/ an aftermarket one, you are saying that you just run new speaker wire correct? i was also wondering if it was possible to utilize the factory amp wiring instead of having to go through all that work.

Ok, I have the sheet, but I don't know where my scanner is. I'll look for it today and put it up if I find it. Ya, when I put in a new H/U with the Infinity sound system, I just run new wires to under the pass. seat to bypass the amp. One time I did use the factory amp wires in the din cable to power up the amp and give it signal. Once I get the sheet up, it will tell you exactly what pins are what and how to use the amp cable for a new H/U.

sweet!, so your saying that normaly you just run new wire from the headunit to under the seat, then slice it in with the amp outputs? ive never even seen the amp, so i dont know what wires are coming out of it. if you could provide a description of what new wire would need to be sliced into what wire on the amp that would be great. :thumbsup :thumbsup :thumbsup

Ok, found the scanner, but it didn't want to work so I did it the "hard" way. It's a paint picture, so don't laugh!

Remember, that view is if you are looking at the rear of the radio, so you will have to reverse it if you are looking at the open end of the cable.

lets see if this pic works better...
thats awesome info, i didnt realize they had a common ground on the speakers. good job and thanks so much!

No problem bro! Next time I do a rewire for the Infinity system I'll take pics and try to write down the pin numbers of the wires to attach to. When I do the rewire, I just use a tone generator (or a 9V battery }( ) to test the speakers. Late

Bringing up an old post.....
I will be making some Infinity Amp integration adaptors if anyone is interested in purchacing one. As soon as I find out the prices of the parts, I'll let you guys know of a price... it should be pretty cheap and time saving. Let me know what you think!

Would this adapter let me plug my aftermarket head unit straight into the infinity amp? If so, I'm interested. I'd like to be able to use my tweeters.

Yes, everything will work just like the factory radio, but better! In order to have the fader function (front + back) your radio must have 2 sets of pre-amp outputs. If it does not, 2 Y-adaptors will be needed, but it will still work.
