I have an old box thats sealed and I think 1sqft big for each sub...holds 2 12s. I put my type Rs in there and it seems like it doesnt sound as hard. What type of box do you guys have? Sealed or ported and how big? I would really like to kno, cuz I kno that the box makes a big difference

Not at home so I don't know the demensions off hand. But how much power are you trying to put to those R's? They need a LOT OF POWER!

Im getting 2 Alpine M500 amps to power each sub, each amp puts out 900 watts each...so...and the dimensions in a sealed box is 0.7 - 1.0ft so...

Right, I remember us talking about that now.

Ask Chad (OZ_GS)...he built a really nice semi-fiberglass enclosure for his. Mine aren't in yet so I can't be of much help, but in most cases we've put them in 1.0 cf of airspace and their fine. But you have to remember. That's not a 1.0cf box. You have to look in the specs on the subs and find out what the total displacement is. Once you have that you need to build a box that is 1.0cf PLUS the displacement. That way when you sink in that sub the displacement takes it back down to 1.0 :thumbsup

how are the subs positioned? try pointing them toward the back as far back as they can go, or towards the hatch glass as far back as they can go. this should help w/ the phase alighnment and reduce destructive interference.

how good is the box? if it is sub-par and has air leaks or flexes under pressure, get a new box.

how are the subs? maby one of them has a fried voice coil? try running one at a time and see if one of them is dead or sounds messed up. press lightly on the duscap with even pressure (with the system off ;) ) and see if you can hear a grinding noise. you may have to remove one of the subs to perform this test, as you wont be able to push very hard while compressing the air inside the box and fighting against both subs suspentions. it might just be a loose wire.

Heh, it's funny how many times that slips. I've replaced subs before thinking they were blown (in customers cars) but later figured out they had unhooked it and reconnected them out of phase

I am not sure on the dimensions for the 12s... I did just under .8 cu ft per sub for my 10s. I don't know the exact volume because of all the contours of the fiberglass bottom and I didn't want to take the time to fill each one up with water but it really close to that.

Heh...major no no...wrong impedance there pal, unless you have the DVC 2ohm subs running all of the voice coils in series.

edit: and even then you're way underpowering them....they need at least 500 watts per sub. Underpower will result in square wave bass which generally sounds like shit.

Could someone like design a box for me? I want something custom and ported to get the best sound out of the box. I'll even paypal you money for your design if I like it.

Ported sub? Are you nuts? You don't want to port those subs man...sealed, sealed, SEALED!!!!!!!!!!!! If you want enormous booming no sound quality ported subs get Cerwin Vegas or something. Don't port your Type R's
