Check out your local Circuit City. We carry the Directed Electronics brands, like Viper and Rattler. Rattler will be your more "cost-concious" brand and will give you the same features as the Vipers.
If you came into my store, I would recommend the Rattler 300 or the Viper 300. The main difference between them is the fact that the Viper has a seperate relay for starter-kill. Personally, I feel that this is a better feature, since it makes it harder to get around as the thief. Either way, you will get a quality brand of product at a reasonable price.
A basic alarm will run you around $200 or so, but the Rattler 300 is also sold as a "Do It Yourself" kit. If you are handy with cars, that might be a good solution for you.
Good luck!

well i got a valiant car alarm. i went ahead and got the convertable version that has interior exterior motion sensors, dual stage shock sensor, starter kill, lots of goodies. i paid 100 ish for that and i bought a pager to go with it, but i doubt your girl will want that. i love my alarm and its a snap to install and the motion sensors are great. you can tune them to where when someone looks into your window, trying to see what you got, it will chrip, when unheeded it will go off. got mine at jcwhitney.com
