I've seen that a few 2gnt'ers have put 8in subs in their doors. How hard is this to do? What kind of work would I need to do to the door to this and what would be the benefits of havin subs in the doors as opposed to the trunk? I'm basically just getting into car audio so any help is awesome :thumbsup. TIA

we are fortunate in that our cars have very deep doors, so its not too terribly hard to fit 8"ers in there. theres three things you need to do to pull it off though:

1) use a lot of sound damping material. youll need to line the inner part of the door as well as the door frame that the panel attaches to. also damp the plastic door panel. you might also want to use the spray on stuff for hard to reach areas. put non-hardning modling clay or somthing similer into crevices and cracks to avoid rattling. wrap the door lock metal rods in felt to keep them from rattling against the door frame. make sure all bolts in the door are tightend.

2) the sub is not going to sound good unless you make sure the back wave is sealed completly from the front, so you need to fill in all the holes with somthing. i believe there are two smallish ones towards the top of the door frame and one big one at the bottom. i used wood to scew on top of the holes to fill up a majority of the area, and then sprayed expanding foam around all the gaps. make sure that the door panel will still fot on once youve done this.

3) trace the factory plastic speaker bracket onto a piece of wood (MDF) to make a templat (including the factory scew holes). working off of this template, build up heigth with more MDF to make sure the back of the speaker will clear the window when it is rolled down (also keeping in mind that too much heigth will cause the front of the speaker to hit the door panel once its reinstalled). mount the 8" in the new bracket and install it.

its pretty simple in theory, but can get complicated if you dont have a lot of fabrication experience. its not hard at all to do, just time consuming. ive tried it before and wasnt pleased becasue of the amount of vibration and rattling i got. i think it was coming from my window assimbly somwhere, but i couldnt track it down. most people dont use the door speakers as the only source of bass, just as midbass speakers running from 60ish hz up to wherever the highs are crossed over (150-200ish hz). the point of them is to bring as much of the sound forward into the car to produce a better soundstage, and lower the rear-sub crossover to keep the bass from being "pulled" to the back of the car. if you want to run them as your only bass speakers, you will be MUCH better off putting them somwhere else.;

damn.. i really need to finish putting my 8s in the doors... i have koolade's old 8s (where is blake btw?)... it would help if you wrapped the wood in some fiberglass... and like said above.. LOTS of sound dampner!
