3612, im stereo stupid!!! help educate me, please. Posted by tim97rs, Aug-15-02 05:22 AM
i have a 4 channel amp. i want to run my 6 1/2 fronts, 6x9 rears and one 10in jl audio sub. can i use one channel each for the front and rear speakers or does each speaker require a seperate channel, i.e. 4 channels for 4 speakers? or can i do the 1 channel for each set of speakers and bridge the sub from the last 2 channels. thanks. please keep the stereo tech lingo (cross-over, passive, 2 ohm, 4 ohm, etc.) to as much of a minimum as possible, i really am very ignorant. (and yea i thought about just having someone else install for me, but then i cant get educated!!! ) so any help will be really appreciated. thanks tim

Well Tim, sorry for the lingo but you're gonna have to know if the amp will run a 2ohm signal load and all that means is you can run 2, 4ohm speakers off 1 channel. If it will handle that then yes you can run your right f/r off one channel and left f/r off the other then your sub of the last two. Tell me what kind of amp it is and I may know off hand.

Well, my that's not an 800w amp. Maybe running at it's peak power it is, but that would be distorted as hell. It's actually a 75x4 amp. If you run your front 2 channels to your f/r speakers it will cut it down to 2ohms and you'll get 100w out of it, then bridge down the last 2 channels for your sub..that will get you 200 watts to your sub.
There should be a switch on the bottom. Make sure you select "high current", this will help make sure your amp doesn't overheat since you'll be running 1 bridged channel and 2 channels at 2ohms.
Don't feel bad about not knowing stuff. We were all there once :) If you have any questions feel free to ask me over e-mail or whatever, I'll answer them.

thanks aaron, i will do that.
yea i Knew it wasent a REAL 800w, which is good. i didint want that much power anyway. the speakers i got are memphis audios with the fronts at 80w and the rears like 100w. so if it works out to 75-100w, thats cool with me. im not into the big compition type sounds or glass breaking base, so this should be good for me. thank you for your input and help. i will e-mail ya soon. tim
