ive been all over the web tryign to find out how to build the best speaker box and its phreakin confusing. i have 2 sony xplod 10"


with this box


i wanna build a box that faces up and takes up the entire trunk, so i turned this box upwards and it sounds like shit, so im wondering if i should do that or not cause it hits hardest pointed towards the back of the car. would a standard rectangle box pointed up sound better than this box pointed up? ive also read mixed htings about porting or sealing them. does it hit harder with not ports? also sony says the box dimension for 1 should be .7 cubic ft, should i go with that number? if anyone has built a box with 2 10s that has some advice id apreciate it.

The box you have pictured is called a bandpass box. This type of box gives real boomy, loud bass, but its restricted quite a bit on what frequencies it can play. It has a very narrow "band" of frequencies, which hurts your sound quality. Bandpass boxes are VERY hard to construct because the air volumes and port lenght and diameter are VERY important to how the box sounds. Unless that box was specifically built for those subs, ditch that box and go with a ported or sealed box. .7cuft of airspace is what is needed for a sealed box set up. This will give you hard, tight, clean, and deep bass. Want it louder? Build a ported box, with the proper specs and that will sound pretty good, maybe not as low as the sealed, but def louder. I just never really cared for bandpass boxes, as most are not designed properly, and never perfectly match what the sub specs really need.

ok i will help you man.but i need to know some shit about them subs first.what kinda of box are tehy made for.if you don't know tell me an i will look it up.we need to know the right kinda box first an then we can go from there man.

ok, i got motivated and bought some wood and started cutting away. i used 3/4 plywood, it was alot lighter than partical board. the box actually came out pretty good and sounds good too. i still gotta finish up my enclosure tho, i hope to have some pictures up in the next week or so.

heres what i know about the speakers, they are sony xplod XS-L1030. 400w. frequency response 25Hz-3500hz. rated power 120w, impedance 4ohms. sony recommends an enclosure of .7 cubic ft. mines a bit bigger than that but they sound as good as they did before. my box is 3ft accrost, 10 inches wide, 1 foot tall. i put a center divider in to seperate the 2. im just wingin it here, but it seems to be workin.

i do have 2 questions tho.. should i port them? so far the box is sealed and sounds really good. but the old box was ported. also, should i insulate them and if so with what? the old box had no insulation.

You can secure a block of wood inside the box to decrease the volume if you made it too large. Also, plywood is a nono! :nono I hope it doesn't break! Line the inside of the box with a light layer of polyfill.

ply is dead wrong.that box won't work for you man.you need to use msd.
an not you should not port that box.the spec say .7 which is a sealed box cuz they didn't say anything about the port.an your box is not to big i am sure.did you take in acount the displacement of the subs.when they say .7 thast means after the sub is in there.so the size i think will be close.if you want to fill the boz i would use maybe 1lb of polyfill

What is MSD? I think he means MDF (medium density fiberboard). If that is what he meant then he is right. I would definately scrap that other box! As far as filling is concerned, you can use it if you would like. What it does is slow down the waves, making it seem like it is a bigger enclosure. I would only use enough fiberfill to fill about half of the box. Also, I would stay with a sealed box.

it is mdf.what is teh displacement of the drivers.i have a feeling your box might be right on the money in size cuz you made it bigger but i don't think you took in account the drivers.but a like 1lb of polyfill would been fine just don't pack the box tight keep it lose.
an here isa fix to your box problem.goto the hardware store you can get some fiberglass an them just coat the inside of the box with it.that should make that box ok

i think ill try that. cause it hits harder, not really louder or deeper tho. and my box is about half the weight of the old box. that and without the spare i can really notice it. but this box is just temp anyway, cause my goal eventually is 4 tens back there and a bigger amp.
