Dynamat is WAY too expensive for me and I'm not much into paying an arm and a leg for something I can do myself cheaper. I've heard of a roofing materical called IceGaurd that is the same thickness and has the same properties as Dynamat and is self adhesive. It's only $70 per 250 sq. feet and you can get it at HomeDepot and roofing contractors use it.

Has anyone used IceGuard or any other alternatives to Dynamat? Do they work as well?

Usually when i want to get rid of noises, i use a bass test cd with many different frequencies, and try and locate the noise. I would do this before any sound deadening material is used. For interior trim pieces rattling, find the rattle, and then use anything you can find to put behind the panel, ie cloth, rubber, styrophome, ect..This usually works very well and is dirt cheap. Now if you have vibrating body panels, i'v found Dynomat to work very well, BUT you don't need much at all for it to work. Some people think you need to cover the whole interior panel with Dynomat for it to work, but really all you need is a small piece on the panel. If the stuff you are talking about is very close to Dynomat, and it stays put, it will probably work well. Anyting that deadens the panel, or adds mass to it, will work as a sound deadener. By adding mass to the panel, you are changing the resonant frequency of that panel, to a higher frequency, usually above most deep bass frequencyies..which is how all sound deadening products work..

i find that pillow guts work really well for interior insulation between plastic panels. plus ripping them apart is a great way to let out some steam!! Then when your all done the boom from your car will tip over all the little civics out there and you wont even have to worry about proving their car is slow as shit!!

I'm not using the Dynamat to stop vibrations really, I can track those down. I'm primarily using it to lower road noise and one hell of a loud exhaust (I'm 2.5" straight piped with an Arospeed Bomb & 4 inch tip)! It'll also help out with the system a lot. I want to do the entire hatch area and under the front seats. I don't need to do the doors, they're fine. Has anyone tried to lower the noise floor by deadening the hatch area and cockpit floor? Did it help much? Maybe lower exhaust noise which rattles EVERYTHING?

Anyways, I'm going to try to find the IceGuard or use Dynamat Extreme that someone can get for $16/roll.

For a dynamat alternative I suggest some generic damping sheets from McMaster-Carr. Their website is http://www.mcmaster.com look for part number 9709T19. Its adhesive backed and asphault based just like dyno mat. It's just way cheaper. A roll 32"x54" will only cost $13 plus shipping.

just find some real cheap foam thats like an inch and half thick and stuff it anywhere possible, that will help.

Eveyone's alternative here are sweet.....Speacially the roll for $13....Can't beat that. When I did my whole sound system I had money for the dynamat xtreme that's why i chose that. No regrets, but I didn't know any different either. And someone mentioned not having to dynamat the "whole" car/panels....This is very true. I didn't do every single square inch. But I used everything I had. My friend dynamated his corolla, it was only a couple of panels here and there, and it made a difference! If you want the dynamat let me know I'll gladly buy it for you, but if there are other alternatives that's sweet too. Either way it will knock over those Civics like Johnny Corona said......=)

That's cool man... and again, I appreciate it! I'm going to check into the IceGuard tomorrow at HomeDepot and see if they sell it in smaller rolls for cheap. I'll let ya know tomorrow if I need the Dynamat extreme because I need to finish up installing my enclosure/racks. I need to lay the dynamat first though.

I'm gonna agree w/sd_eclipse, I used the hi-temp mastic from mcmaster.com in my eclipse and in a buddy's escort. my freind's escort is so quiet, it almost sucks the noise out of the air... it's a really awkward experience at first. definaly worth the effort. i used it on my floorboards, and dynamat on the doors and interior panels. the only thing I didn't like about the hi-temp mastic was it's adhesion. but if you just keep the area really clean before you apply it, you're all good. but for the price, it's the best bang for the buck, period.

I've tried the rolled roofing crap you get from the hardware store, and it's not worth the trouble. I used it on my old car, and you have to use 3 layers of that stuff, to equal the density of one layer of hitemp mastic/dyanmat. and the rolled roofing also is very messy to use, you're hands will be all black, and it'll gum up your knive. dynmat/hi-temp mastic won't.

all in all, you get what you pay for. on my next car, I'll probably use dynamat super all around, because it's performed the best for me.

I finished my installation yesterday and I used the stuff from mcmaster.com. It works very well! It's quality is equal to the dynamat that I'm used to using. $40 for enough to do the hatch area, lift gate, and back seat. Thanks sd_eclipse!

What about the deadening materials that don't use asphault - because they add up to a lot of weight in the end. Have any of you used a material that was really light weight???

This stuff I used is about the lightest I've ever had. It works great too!
