166, Better to turn up GAINS or BASS BOOST on amp? Posted by eclipse804, Jun-18-01 04:23 PM Hey all, I have a crunch v-150c pushing two 10" RF Punch XLC's. The Pioneer Premiere head unit has 4 volt RCA preouts. The gains on the amp go from 0.2 mV to 4 V. I have it at about 3 V which is a pretty low input sensitivity. If I want more bass, should I adjust the bass boost or the gains on the amp? The bass boost can go up to +12 db. I want whatever is safest for the amp, which is running at 2 ohms mono. Also, is it bad if the meters on the amp go past the 100% mark when I hit hard bass? Thanks. | |

The reason I say this is because if I turn up the gain and decide to turn up the volume on my head unit, my amps protection thing cuts it off. If I just turn the boost up, it never cuts off on me and sounds much better. Although I'm sure this doesn't apply to all amps but it works best for me. | |

If the gain is too high, the sub will sound kind of strained. I have a problem with mine doing that. I have 4 volt preouts, and my gain is WAY down. The bass gets sloppy with a crappy clipped signal when the gain is up too high. The bass boost can do the same thing, but you're probably less likely to damage the amp or sub with it. Are they referring to half-way on the dial, or half-way voltage wise? Mine goes from 0.2 to 4 Volts. But the jump from 2 to 4 volts is only like a 1/4 turn. Its not a linear dial. I have it set at about 2 volts right now, which is half-way voltage wise, but really a quarter turn up from the lowest setting (4 volts). I have the bass boost up half-way too at +6db out of 12. Sounds really good with CD's, but with radio, I need to turn up the bass on the head unit to equal the amount of bass I get with Cd's...thanks again | |

173, This is how my system is... Posted by Skrilla, Jun-23-01 12:49 PM ...have the preout volts running through the system at their max. Definitely turn your bass boost on. The boost adds subwoofer bass not just bass, then turn up your stereo (like previously stated) to just right before you get distortion. The stereo should be pretty loud. That is the limit of sound quality on your stereo and should not be turned up past that. During this whole thing I would have the gain down to about quarter of the way. Then I would turn up the gain with the stereo turned down to half way until you hear distortion. Now your gain is good and you still have room to turnup the stereo. | |
