Mine's straight-up right now. Moving it in the summer, but will still point straight-up (will sit in the spare tire well). Works better that way I think... better acoustics since the sound will reflect off the hatch glass and amplify itself a bit.

Face them up and use the angle of the glass to your advantage. you don't want them facing perfectly parallel to anything, it will reflect back at the speaker and cause odd cancellation (read: not as loud/sounds funny or out of time with the rest of the music)
using the angle of the glass will bounce the sound more into the cabin area of the car and get you much better volume and response.

i built a box with the subs facing the back seat but angled toward each other. two ports on top facing the hatch. sounds pretty good but its too heavy im gonna switch it into the spare tire well when the warm weather rolls around.

Hmm, I have mine facing straight back, but I may try something new after this. Perhaps just point it up. But I have one huge ass box, and its also ported in the front where alot of my friends have sealed boxes.

Honestly, everytime I install amp/sub in a hatchback car, they face the tailgate. I can't tell much of a difference between facing straight up or firing at the tail lights. Either way, you're still using the hatch area as reverb. and it's moving air the same.
And unless you build a custom floor, aka spare tire enclosure, I think the tail light facing sub box takes up less cargo room and looks better IMO.

I tried sub facing up yesterday. I defintately like it facing rearwards better.

if you're gonna maount them facing the taillights, just make sure they're slightly angled.
after I get the car running again I'm gonna do a spare tire well box and I think I might try making a custom hatch cover/parcel shelf to prevent the stock heavy one from causing cancellation

Just like he said.. best sound i can get from my subs is toward the taillights with a slight angle..

If I had to have a system in the Eclipse I'd have them facing the tail lights in an angled box. That's the only way I've ever had them in the vehicles that had a box besides my truck, they're facing the seats.
