12707, Alpine Type R vs Infinity Posted by clips3kid, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Currently i have Two 12inch Infinity sub woofers. What im wondering is do you think one 500 watt rms Type R would hit harder than two 300rms infinity subs? It would be off the same aplifier, same exact setup, only difference is better box and better sub, but only one sub.

What kind of type r has only 500 rms??? The infinity ref. series is a good sub for the money but the type r will sound 100 times better if it is placed in the right box. If you want it to hit hard as hell I would recommend putting it in a slotted box with about 2 cubic ft. It sounds nice if you have the amp to push it.

well im getting the type R for $225, yes i know its what it costs in the store but... im getting a Q-logic box (retails at $120) and a 4gauge rockford wiring kit, for $70 more...
bestbuy's website says that the alpine type R is 500watts RMS

NM, I am thinking of the X. I would get it from bestbuy because you can buy a service plan with it for 4 years, that way when you blow it you can take it back and get another one brand new! Yeah it does have 500 rms but is steady at much more than that.

Ok, so it will hit harder than my two 300rms 12's?
from what ive been told one speaker at 500RMS will hit harder than two at 300RMS, both my of infinity's right now are getting like 230RMS and ill be putting 560RMS to the Alpine Type R. Also, i know the person im buying the speaker from, he bought the 4 year plan on it so he said if i blow it he will take it in for me... i doubt 560RMS will blow it tho considering its only 560 at 100% volume and i never turn mine up that far
im going to be upgrading from 8 to 4 gauge wire, and im using a ported Q-Logic box, so im really hoping to get more bass from this bad boy
Edit: heres a link to the box. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7008542&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03082&id=1099392684268

The power you have going to it will be fine, I have had 1600 going to it(not just burping it) and it lasted a couple of months. The box you are looking at is not bad if thats all you got, but I would get one a little bigger. The sub will starve of air if you crank it in that box. They should have one at bestbuy on display. Go listen to it.

Thanks for the input.
i threw it in my car today and had a listen, i like it better with the port on the box open... definately sounds good though.

i run 2 12" typer-r subs each powered by an apline MRV-T757 amp, they are by far the hardest cleanest subs ive heard. Alpine DEFINATLY respond differently depending on the box construction. skip the Q-logic and build a high quality sealed box (dont skimp!) and you wont regret it.

Have someone build you a box for the R it will sound 10 times better then the Q box cause the Q boxes arent built to spec for the sub

You're damn right.
Build a box to spec. Quit fucking around. The box is what makes a sub sound good. Too big and they dont move. Too small and you get alot of punch but miss the low frequency.
Stay away from bandpass entirely.
Ported boxes sound like crap, imo....even if they are built to spec.

12952, RE: Alpine Type R vs Infinity Posted by Noogabox, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Sealed Boxes that are build to Spec from Medium density fiberboard are the best sound quality. Quality means the ability to reproduce sound as it is recorded on the cd. However Ported Boxes that are tuned to the optimal frequency for the subwoofer are MUCH louder than their sealed counterparts. Take in mind however that a Ported box tends to be around 2.5 times as large as sealed. Bandpass is a retarded idea that makes it almost impossible to build the box to spec tune to the subwoofer so STAY AWAY FROM BANDPASS. Bandpass mostly "looks cool" however isnt a very good performer.

just a update, i went to a spl competition and i hit 138db with one 12" type r running at 1200w rms, with the box i posted earlier.
Ill be able to hit 140+ easily now that i know what frequency to play, and i flipped the box around.

I stick with one type R and Ive got a Kenwood 1700 watt amp running like 500-550 rms between the two. I can honestly say that my stuff hits much cleaner than the infinity did when I put it in my car. But it also depends on what series infinty u are using. I tried thte reference series and just didnt get a good clean hit, but the Aline IMO is on point.

hey guys i just orderd a sigle 12" type r 2ohm. and Hifonics BXi 1206D which will give 900w rms to it. Also a 0 guage wire kit. I built a custom 3 cubic feet ported box for which i found dimensions on http://realmofexcursion.com/. Everything should be in the mail by the end of this week. Do you guys think that the stock charging system will handle this setup? I will post results soon.

we've got a pretty beefy alternator 120a I believe. I'll have to check my notes from when I did stereo work, I know I have the formula for calculating how much amperage you need for a specified wattage (IIRC 1000w @ 14volts requires 60+ amps of current)

12828, RE: Alpine Type R vs Infinity Posted by baller36969, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
First off definately go for the type r, I got some at my work and damn do they hit hard, and don't get a Q-logic box, you won't believe how many I've seen split open from the power of these subs. Also I recommend a capacitor just to help you with keeping your headlights from dimming everytime the sub hits.

12832, RE: Alpine Type R vs Infinity Posted by ivan300, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
i made a mistake, im actually giving my 12" type r 1200w rms, and it hits hard. its taking the power no problem. the sunroof shakes, the rear wiper jumps around its kind off funny hehe. ill post some pics soon
here is a good read why you don't need capacitors http://forum.realmofexcursion.com/showthread.php?t=17970

Ok I know I dont have any Icon....I just signed up today I worked in car audio now for at least 3yrs and do all my own installs. To be quite honest I have never heard a cleaner sub than "diamond audio's" D9 series. But anyways you should check this out it WILL double the db output and sound the cleanest.

Oh yea save the money on a capacitor, If you are running 4gauge power wire, upgrade the ground wire for the BATTERY to 4 gauge also. Stock ground is only 8gauge.... Better sound and draw with only 10 bucks versus spending around 200$ for a "good" streetwires full farad capacitor!
