11667, ANTENNA HELP!!
Posted by 99_GS_OZ_5SPD, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
Okay here it goes.....i have a 99 clipse with the OZ package (obviously) but anyways the power antenna is not cooperating! whenever i turn the radio off...the antenna stays up and does not move back down unless i guide it to so i have given up on that approach. the antenna engine makes a noise which tells me the engine is functional but i think that there might be a jamming problem with the antenna?!?! Also when i make the antenna go down, when i turn it back on the antenna goes up about 95% and then stops and make a VERY ANNOYING noise for approx 10 secs. If anyone knows how to fix this problem please reply A.S.A.P!!!! THANKS

replace the antenna motor. its worn to a point of non functionality. i beleive theres a few posts about replacement (aftermarket) antennas around here somewhere if you search.

if anyone knows of a good guide to replacing these, it would be much appreciated... i didnt want to spend the $298028598325 on a stock one so i bought an aftermarket one for the old eclipse, needless to say after i had installed it, it only went up, and hesitated in going down, had to force it. Im thining of just asking this one friend of mine w/ a wrecked GS-T for his for a small fee.

aftermarket ones are wayyyyy simpler than the stock ones. however if you're going from stock power to aftermarket you will need to fuss with the wiring a bit as the stock harness uses like 7 wires or something to control the motor. don't ask.

with an after market one you have basically 3 wires (not counting the antenna cable going to your radio). you have power, ground, and the one to make the antenna go up. power goes to power (constant is fine). ground goes to ground. the 3rd wire receives a +12v when you want the antenna extended and nothing when you want it down. the internal circuitry controls the directional motion and everything. just find which wire from the stock harness gives a signal when the car/radio turns on. that's it.

p.s. i upgraded from the stock fixed antenna so i had to hassle with running a signal wires from allll the way up front. there's already a constant +12v in the trunk area you can tap and ground is... well anything.

Hes right...you have about a week or so before all it does it make lots of noise and does nothing....you can buy yourself some more time though... get a cloth and wipe some sewing machine/3 in 1 oil on it.

depending on the deck it might either be on the back of the deck or no the wire harness you prolly had to buy. there should only be one cable/port that looks like it would fit an antenna wire.

Sorry but I have to disagree here. His antenna motor is fine. It's the mast that is bad. At the bottom of the antenna where you cannot see is a long white piece of plastic with teeth in in that the gear(s) on the motor grab and spin up or down to make the antenna move. Over time these will break causing the antenna to do what you are explaining. It will go up but not completely and start "buzzing" when it can't go up anymore. When you have to push down on it when it's trying to go down is because the gears aren't/can't grab the teeth on it. If you notice when you're pushing on it usually you will have to twist it in 1 direction or another for the gears to grab the teeth and pull it down. The best solution is to remove the antenna completely from the car, take it apart and get the broken piece out. Put it back together, power the antenna on, turn it off and feed the new antenna in. You may have to do this a couple of times for it to go completely in. Once it's in, put the nut back on the top and you're done. Probably would take an hour or so to do the whole thing.

or just buy an entire new antenna for $50 and not worry about your motor dying later. idk how difficult/expensive replacing the stock mast is but installing an entire replacement aftermarket antenna is cake. i converted from fixed to power so i had to run wires. if you're already got a power antenna the swap should be easy. haven't had any problem with mine so far.

Easy as pie. I bouth my power ant. from a garage sale, sealed for 43. Then I tapped the constant i nthe hatch, grounded to the side of the body on some bolt that was already there and ran a signal wire to the back of my head unit and spliced it in.

On the back of MOST aftermarket headunit's, the wire is blue. soem newer models have dual 12+ switches. One for an amp (constant with radio and cd/tape on, one for ant, that shuts down the ant when you move to cd or tape). Its really an easy job, took me 30 minutes becasue I took my time running the lines.

I too have a 99 OZ EDITION. Less than a month ago I swapped out the antenna mast (I accidently snapped it in half...oops). From what it sounds like the antenna motor is fine, it is the mast that needs replacing or possibly just greasing. I bought a replacement mast on E-bay new for less than $30.
