11480, stock horn w/ aftermarket alarm? Posted by 96rs-t, Sep-04-05 02:49 PM
do i need a relay to hook up my aftermarket alarm to the stock horn? I really hate that 6 siren horn, gay ass crap i swear. I'd imagine i do need a relay. I have only one wire coming from the brain that goes hooked up to the aftermarket horn and then there is the ground. thanks

I dont think you need a relay dude.. should just be a simple positive and negatived output.

thanks. Yeah, i think if i just splice into the pos side of the stock horn, it should be ok. I'll give it a shot.

Careful, that will fry your alarm.
The car has a relay on the horn in the main fuse boxy under the hood, no sense in added another so this is how you use it:
Most alarms w/ a factory horn output have it set as a (-) neg. output (usually 500 mA max), so just run it to the brown wire w/ white strip in the stearing column, and it will use your stock relay!
When my alarm goes off it will fire my 6-tone 120db siren for for about 2 seconds, then BLAST my air horn that I wired in place off the stock horn.
It will wake everyone up within one block :)

thanks for the tip. Glad you responded before i did anything stupid. I figure I will just use the stock horn until I upgrade to some nice air horns.

ok, just looked at the wiring colors in vFaq. Says the OEM horn colors are Green/Black & Green/Red (-). The brown/white is a part of the OEM Alarm DISARM. My car didnt come with oem alarm. Which wire am i suppose to splice into, the Green/Black or Green/red? I'm guessing my car won't even have that brown/white wire. :shrug

the easiest thing to do if you can't find tha appropriate wiring diagrams would be to open up your steering column and trace the wire. it's the ones connected to your stock horn buttons. they are a simple ground paddle type switch. get a decent length of wire and ground one end to the chasis of the car. take the other end and when you connect it to the appropriate wire the horn should go off. this is exactly what your alarm will be doing - providing a ground to that wire. idk if there was a problem with the wiring in my wheel (my buttons suck major ass) but the alarm shop chose to tap the horn relay in the bay instead at the fuse box. this is another possible solution but requires excessive wiring.
