if you were to hook up a circuit tester to the siren wires, the tester should flash in sequence to the beeps, correct? even if the siren is bad, the wires should still carry power, flashing the tester right? this will help me narrow down what's screwy about my alarm lately. thanks

Yeah if you hook it up in parallel, not series.
