10850, how to get loud bass in a truck?
Posted by sek95GS, Apr-06-05 11:28 AM
Alright, I know this doesnt deal with a 2gnt. But i am helping a friend install a syetem in his truck. He has a 92 chevy standard cab full size truck. So there isnt a ton of room to put things. He wants his truck to be as loud as possible without cutting through. He isnt the biggest on sound quality. So from all you experience what has worked the best in a standard cab truck for loud bass.

Thanks
Gabe

lol josh
no shit.

Just wanted the best route to go with subs in a truck.

edit. i decided to post this because some of you have been in the car audio industry longer then i have and may know how to successfully do this.

Wait, we can't cut through the cab? What a pussy. That officially limits the options to jack and shit. About the only thing he can do is an L7 Kicker Solobaric in a truck wedge with a good amp. Tell him to port that bed and put on a Toneau cover then do 4 rows of 3 15's and a shit load of amps. I'd hit it.

my buddy had a 95 single cab chevy. he had 2 12" subs and an 800w amp. he had them seperately in slim line boxes behind the seats. that thing would hit so hard it would inhibit your breathing. he kept bottles of asprin in the glove box. remember...a truck is not an eclipse. you have probably 1/3 of the space...so it will require less equip to get more sound in a truck.

although aarons idea is taking it to extremes :P

it is less space to pressurize but there is no cabin gain in your favor really so while some frequencies will sound louder, others will not (or be missing altogether) which is why most truck systems tend to sound boomy.
Cut Through and put a crazy system in the bed... that's what I would do. I could only imagine what I would do if I had 100 cubic feet of space to fill with subs.

Trust me, it's fun :) Can you say 10,000 watts and 20 12" subs :) Oh yeah!

yeah, well i figured he wanted more "boom" than actual quality sound..which is why i chimed in. sounds like he just wants a thumpin truck. and yeah, thats what i meant, there is less space therfore there is less to be pressurized.

I modified my glovebox opening on a 88 chevy I had. I mounted just the modified face of the gb on. Then built a wedge box for a 10" sub to mount under the dash using the space saved from the compartment area, as to keep the wedge as far from the passenger feet area as possible and but gaining some cubic inches for the box. I used a heavy gauge mesh cover for it also. The forward facing end was secured to the firewall area by pulling down the flooring and putting 2 brackets on each end then bringing the flooring back up to cover them. This was back before digi cams or I would more than likely have a pic. It was a nice set up when it was done and it was loud even with a radioshack $40 dollar sub and a no name 200watt amp , remember this was like 10 years ago, before technolgy lol.

Does he already have the equipment he'll be using? if so what is it and can he afford more. Would he be willing to put a cap w/no windows and completely remove the rear wall of the cab? Options are unlimited. Tell us what he has and we will tell you the best way to make dbs.

Alot of insight and ideas. Thank You and keep them coming.

He had 2 jlw0 10s and a jl 500/1 in the truck before and that wasnt loud enough for him. He really doesnt want to cut through the cab. I told him to buy a crx and put a couple 15s in a vented enclosure in it. But he wants to keep with the truck.

All that he has left from his old system is his wiring and his eclipse deck. So he is getting ready to start over with about a grand to start with, and maybe another grand or two in the near future. The money is there for excellent equipment.

Well by not allowing cutting he's limiting us. He could get some monster sound with a simple box with 2 15's in his bed with port-throughs to the cab, then do a floor cut and build 2 boxes under each seat to hold 2 10's with a welded metal box under the body. But like I said, he's really limiting us by only allowing for the behind the seat option.

Yeah I understand that. I have tried to talk him into it. But he wont cave in.

DAMMMIT!!!

I think it could be insane if he cut.

I think his best bet would have to be 3 or 4 subs in a sealed enclosure right behind the seats firing at the windshield. If he wants people to hear him coming for a while then have him fire them towards the back of the cab. Dont know what else to tell ya.

Now thats an interesting idea.

Yeah, im just getting ideas for him. I knew from the get go that there are many limitations without cutting through. Thanx to everyone who gave their imput.

It may sound weird but its true, anyone who has installed all kinds of different systems would know. that if you fire subs towards the back of the vehicle then the bass sounds better outside the front with windows down. If fired at front of the car, then bass sounds better outside the rear. You can tell when a car passes you with its system on, which way his subs a firing by how the bass sounds before and after he passes you. So if your friends ultimate goal is for people to hear him coming from a mile away then fire subs at rear of cab.

yeah, I understand the concept. I just have never seen that done in a truck. The subs in my car face the rear. aka slot loaded.

this is really true. i can be off to the side and so-so on the loudness. then i get to the front of my car and BLAM. ;P

That's very very difficult to achieve in a standard cab pick up truck. Depending on how tall tihs kid is and how far back the seat has to move is what will influence the position and direction of the subs.

i would really like to see it done. I also forsee fitment issues.

Anyway, the kid finally listened to me and is trading his truck in. He is looking for a 90s camaro (v8 manual). I can work with a camaro alot easier then that damn POS truck. heh

Ill let ya know how it goes.

Actually subs play a part..but not what makes it loud...you see I can have 10 subs and they will do nothing...but if I put LOTS of power to them then we have BASS. So the answer to loud is ampilfier power, not subs. You can use just about any sub today but without lots of power you are moving no air, so no bass is happening.

just wanted to comment on the slot-loading (corner loading for home audio guys) stuff...

that is THE best way to take a limited area of space and produce an efficient outcome as far as dB levels are concerned. make sure the subs are at least 1.5-2" away from the reflective surface and either downfire them (my favorite) or face them towards the back. forced wave alignment rocks my socks. naturally, you'll want to make sure the subs are in a proper enclosure for their t/s parematers. as aaron mentioned earlier...it all depends on how much space the driver will sacrifice.

you get 2 500 watt amps and 4 kicker solobarics, the L5 12's and ur set
