Well I got my 2 pair of Alpine SPS-171A components and my pair of SWS-1242D's in today and I need some opinions.
Im putting a pair of the components in the front with tweeters on the upper part of the A-pillars. What I need your opinons for is, where should I put the tweeters at for the other pair of components Im putting in the back. I was thinkin on the upper part of the B-pillars thats right by your head.
Do you think thats gonna be too much highs right there by my head or do you have another suggestion?

That's about the best place for tweets in the front. Don't put them on your a-pillars, that just screams "steal me".

And in the rear just mount them inside the pod with your midbass, you want your rear to be more "fill" than high clear sound. You want your staging to be up front.

How about mounting the tweets on the inside of the C pillar aiming toward the rearview mirror. That should be pretty good imaging as long as you've got the rear levels turned down just a bit.

Not to make it sound like I think the suggestions already posted aren't good because I agree with some but I think you should test some different ones. Wire everything up, place the mids where you think you want them and then move the tweeters around. Put some of that sticky tack on the back so they stay in place and just move them. I'm assuming that not many people sit in your back seat so put the ones in the rear where they sound best for you when you're in the front. When you find a place that you think works, take the car for a spin, just to make sure that road noise doesn't take anything away from the sound. Good luck man.

I was just thinking about what I'd do in my car, cuz my coaxial rears have really muffled highs, so I was thinking it might be better to get that tweet up a little and aimed. However, I definitely agree with ^^^. Every speaker system is different, from which speaker you use, to what headunit you're pushing, so do as ^^^ suggested and just decide for yourself where the best sound comes from. Good luck!

WEll, if you came to me asking me to install a competition system those two rear speakers would only be putting out 1500hz to 10Khz in mono because that's all rears should be. Your bright highs should only be in the front. But hey, do what makes you happy.

You bring up a good point Amiller, one I will admit I did not know. DJ, are you going to use this for competitions or just for daily driving? If it's a comp car then I'm sure you can more than trust what Amiller is saying, he seems to really know his stuff when it comes to this. On the other hand, I feel that the only thing that matters is how you think it sounds, if the car is going to be used for just daily driving/listening. I have done installs on friends cars and thought the finished product sounded horrible, but I didn't change a thing because they were happy with it and it was their car. So, like I said before, try different things so its how you want it to sound but if you plan on comps then I would go with what Amiller says.

Well should I hook all 4 tweets up front? The only reason I have 2 pair is because the came with the 6.5's obviously, lol. Well unless somebody has a better idea I think I will just do that, find the best spots.

As far as Im concerned, its just going to be my daily driver. If more should come out of it, then so be it.

No, it doesn't work that way. You can't just hook up speakers like that. Just hook them up right and fade your speakers forward some. I'm not sure if the Type S series Alpines have a selectable tweet pad or not, if they do set your fronts to +3db and your rears to -3db.

yes. that's where I have mine, I put them there on aaron's suggestion and they sound soooo nice. the highs are crystal clear now, and the staging is good because I just have coaxials in the back. just put the tweets in the stock location, Type S components might even have the conversion thing to put the tweeters on top of the mid. if that option is available to you, do that, or flush mount them right next to the rears and fade the speakers forwards a bit.
you couuuld put them in the stock tweeter locations at the front of the dash, and then fading front & rear would adjust the height of the stage up and down which could be nice but you would need to attentuate the tweeters by at least -3dB if you can (the crossover might have a jumper for it).
JL Audio used that setup on their demo car last year and won best sound in show with it. you'd also have to high pass filter them at around 1,500hz or "s" sounds and cymbals will sound very grating.

U can flush or surface mount them in any of ur A-pillars (which is where i usually like them flushed), on the front windshield in the corners (sounds awesome, very popular wit cust at the shop), or flush them somewhere in the doors. Those are the basic choices for sound Q. also remember to put inline some capacitors to block out low frequencies (like 0.20 at radioshack, they're very worth it).

Do I still need these capacitors even though these are components? When you say the corner of the windshield, do mean in the stock places on the dash or up top in the corners?

No u won't need them as long as they came with the switch pod (bass blocker and mid filter switch) which most component systems do come with. in the top corners of ur windshield, people outside can't see them because of the strip of stock tint there, only can be seen from the inside real good sound Q. Don't stick tweeters on the dash, ever, ull deflect off the windshield and high frequencies don't tend to like that. you do have a good many of choices, just try different spots out, i'm sure ull find the one ya like.
