10544, Looking for pix of surface mounted 6X9 and 6.5s. Anyone do it?? Posted by jdpilot, Feb-19-05 02:22 PM
I am extremely new to the audio forum of this site. I just got a sweet deal on a set of 6.5s for the front and 6x9s for the rear. They are pioneers. I am contemplating the install. I would really like to mount them more towards the surface of the door and rear panels over the existing holes but so I can utilize the new grills that came with the speakers as I think they would look sick visible (grills). Aanyone mount them this way in the 2g?? Pics appreciated, thanks.

I am a little confused as to what it is you want to do. You want the grills that came with the speakers to be flush with the body panels in the car? The only way I can see doing that is to cut a hole in the panel and then figure out at which depth the speaker/grill need to be mounted in order for it to sit flush. I don't think I have every seen anyone try this but I'm sure it can be done but I don't know how it would look. Using this method the hole would need to be cut to the exact size of the speaker at the same angle it will sit when mounted. Good luck with this, post some pics when you are done so we can see it.

Good feedback. I was thinking they may look tasteful, like millers surface mount tweets in his doors.

I like how the surface mount tweeters look in my car too. it'd be nice to have the 6.5s up front mounted on the surface, I've thought about doing it a few times but don't have the patience to do it right, but it would look like poo having the 6x9s hangin out in the back.

Yeah Jason, tweets are totally different than trying to mount speakers on the surface. Tweets look classy, 6.5's or 6x9's look tacky.

those fancy grills are more for cars that have them mounted on the rear deck i think...

Here is what I did on my doors and i am thinking about doing something like it to my 6x9's this summer. (the pic is somewhat big but it makes it easier to see my speakers)

cant see ur pic, but a note to the original poster. I totally agree with aaron they would look like crap surface mounted in the doors, it is very possible, but would not look that good. Those grills are for rear mount or kick panel speakers.

i would worry having a pioneer 4 way mounted in my door like that. there's no grill for the mids and tweets. it looks pretty good but all it takes is one not-so-bright passenger... :wary

That job looks awesome, but those are 5 1/4"s (correct me if i'm wrong which i think i'm not). 6.5"s would look different than that in our doors (can be done) and would prob stick out another 1/2" from our already deformed inwardly sticking door (guess that makes sense)

Won't make much difference. Your mid driver is an omnidiretional wave producer. You need to focus on the angle of your tweet, but that mid can be put in stock location with stock position and you'll never notice the difference.

And after closer inspection, those are the same pioneer 4 ways I picked up. How much did you get them for?? I found them for 29.99 clearance at best buy and a matching pair of pioneer 3 way 6x9s for the same price. Shibby!
