10516, Affordable Upgrade for Stock Infinity System for GST Posted by tomatot, Feb-16-05 11:23 AM
Hi, I am looking for speakers to upgrade my stock Infinity System. Do you guys have any suggestions? I am not going to spend a lot. I just want to upgrade my speakers. I don't need very strong bass. I want clean and nice music quality.
I was looking at Apline 3-1/2inch for the front which is about $50, originally 100 dollar before discount.
I did a research. Someone said we need to remove the dash board to change the front speakers. I beleive that we don't need to. Do you know how to pop up the grill?
Thank you so much !

3 1/2? Where do you plan on putting those? They won't fit in the dash as those are 2" speakers. Only thing you can do is gut them and put tweets in there. And you just slip a flat head screw driver in there gently and pop them out.

umm you know your front speakers are in the doors, right? :wary
they take 6.5" speakers. if you want to put something in the stock tweeter locations (dash) buy a set of 6.5" components so the tweeter can go there and the woofer in the door. if you've got the infinity system the rears are probably 6x9's.

I think I got something wrong. In short, I want to change the front dash speakers first. Do you guys know any good deal? Is that quite easy to change that by pop up the grill and connect the wires? as I am not a pro like you guys, I am quite worrying about the intsallation procedures. Although I am an engineering student, I am not quite familiar with the wire stuff... hahaha
Thanks guys !

well there's not really much point in replacing JUST those. i don't even know if the stock setup has a crossover. the dash speakers are ONLY for tweeters. you will not get any decent mid-bass or whatever else from replacing just those. furthermore any replacement tweeters will probably need a crossover. then there's the problem of running the wires. i think the stock front speakers (tweeter/door) are connected in parallel. there is not a separate output from your radio for the tweeters. there's only 4 outputs (front left, front right, back left, back right). it is not made to have an aftermarket tweets and the stock door speaker. i think people have bought cheapo tweeters off ebay for kicks to plop in there but nothing to make any mentionable improvements in sound quality. if you want better sound but don't want to buy components forget about the dash speakers and replace your door speakers. most people with aftermarkets speakers in our cars don't have anything in the dash anyways.

Yeah skip those dash speakers dude. I cut mine completely out and I'll never put any back in there. It's the worst location for speakers in our cars so I just left them alone.

hey aaron, do you know how they sound if you get a good set of components up front and put the tweeter in there? i don't really wanna add on any pods or anything. if it's not gonna sound good is it better to just get some 2 ways to put in the door instead?

I see. Thanks for the suggestion !
I think I got what you mean. The dash speakers are like the surround of the home theater. and the Front Speakers is like the two front big bookshelf speakers at home. Is that correct? It is because I thought that the dash are the Center speaker of the 5.1 theater. therefore, I was thinking about upgrading the center to improve the human voice quality. Maybe that's a wrong idea.
So, if I want to get improvement in sound quality, I think I should change the door first. For the door, I saw the Infinity Reference 6002si or should I get Alpine?
Thanks a lot guys ! I have no idea indeed. hahaha

I would not compare your car to a 5.1 surround because there is really nothing in common. If you replace the ones in the door with a good set of 2-way (maybe 3-way if they make it in the correct size) the sound will be better than stock. I don' t know how it works in the Eclipse but I know some vehciles (Jeeps for one), with the Infinity premium package, the front doors only carry the lows. The highs are made up by the tweeters in the dash. Like I said, I know this is true in my brothers 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee but I'm not sure about the Eclipse. If this is so then you would want to replace the front door and tweeters in the dash with a comonent set up. If this is not the case, full range to the doors, then I would just put a good set of coaxials in there. I really don't think you will hear the differnece between a 2-way in the door and a component setup using the factory tweeter location, unless you have a trained ear. Good luck man, let us know how it turns out. P.S- Sorry if that is hard to understand. When my mind gets flowing I have a hard time making sense of it.

yup, I think you are right.
"The highs are made up by the tweeters in the dash." and the door speakers carry the Low with some bass
So, probably, if I want to improve the sound quality, do I need to change both the dash and the door?
Could you write a few lines about how to change these two speakers? I wanna get some ideas.
Thanks a lot guys !

If you look next too my door handle you'll see where I mounted the tweets, and in the door is the mid. Here's the rule: within 8" from the mid or beyond 18" from the mid is where you should mount your tweeter.
The dash is the worst place for highs because tweets fire at a 90 degree angle, when you fire a 90 degree angle straight up at a raked angle glass windshield the signal refracts off the glass basically inverting the frequency wave. When that interacts with the other non-inverted waves from your other speakers it causes cancellation.
So leave the dash alone, just unplug them.
And Tomatot, you can have 5.1 surround in your car but not without processors and a lot of stuff you can't get for less than $1000. Your dash speakers are NOT like a center channel as they are fed stereo dependent signals. You have to get a dedicated mono high range center channel amplifier and run it off a 5.1 surround processor fed by a head unit that spits out a 5.1 signal. It's not complicated, but it is costly.

Yo! I think I got what you mean. This is the reason why the BMW 3 series. The Harman Kardon dash speakers are on the black triangle of door of the car next to the side rear mirror. I think you are probably right!
And regarding the 5.1, it is too expensive... hahaha... but, good to know something more.
You know what, I went to BestBuy today. They said that I can't use the original Stereo because it is too weak. Is that true?
You know I want to upgrade but not putting lots of money in it. Becoz I will change my car in 1-2 years' time.
So, if I just buy a pair of door speakers, will it work on my car?
Thanks!

They're trying to sell you a radio dude, it's their job. Now if you want a high quality system then yes you need to upgrade head units and amps and what not, but your current system will run some new speakers.

right, I can guess that... hahaha maybe when they look at the eclipse, they know we may want to spend some money, for the civic, corolla, they are obviously not willing to spend a lot or upgrade a lot.
Thanks for your reply! It helps a lot !@!

you might want to ask Brynden about the 5.1 setup, back when Shamu was still a 2.0 litre, he had the whole thing goin, not sure how it sounded though
I believe he did it all digital audio stuff from a sponsor?
