Tuning?? lol jk. right now ive got the s-afc set to 0% correction, and since im running the same fuel set-up as the star kit, tuning isnt a NECESSITY right now. im gonna get a wide band and bigger injectors and tune it with the s-afc until i get my MSnS. but since im only running 3-4 psi right now, im fine. once i get the intercooler hooked up im gonna crank her up to 7-8 and tune her there.

keep it coming guys

I like it. There is much joy in piecing something together and seeing it actually work. Congratu-fucking-lations, you are now doomed like the rest of us to chase that boost dragon for just a little more.

Nice man. Very creative. I pieced mine together as well but I also upgraded everything along they way and it cost me a little more! LOL. Good job man. I built my manifold almost EXACTLY the same way but I used a little bigger pipe and my turbo flange is in the middle.

Nice job my friend

Very proud of you, when you first talked about building a custom kit I thought you were full of poo but you def. proved me wrong!

I hope when I get my intercooler Piping custom made at the muffler shop I can take some pics and give some info on how I made it all fit.

I myself have only spent 500 dollars and still have 500 more to spend to complete my kit...in due time

A couple of things... those rubber HD Racing (Home Depot) couplers absolutely do not like seeing positive pressure (they are meant for water drainage). Secondly, there is a disclaimer on OptimusPeterson's website that the HRC directions are not to be viewed by anybody who has not bought an HRC kit. It's one thing that you read them, it's another thing to link to it.

I would just hate to see those directions taken down because of abuse. They are vastly helpful to people who are actually installing an HRC kit. The expense that you mentioned that is associated with buying a kit, well, a lot of it is the expertise that is being paid for. HRC pioneered this kit, and made a good product. Those directions were made at their expense.

That being said, nice innovative way of turbocharging a 420a.

EDIT: http://home.bendcable.com/optimuspeterson/disclaimer.htm See what page you get when you click "yes."

Ya i have houde the HD racing couplers dont like positive pressure, ive blown 4 of those elbows our already. i just gotta order some silicone couplers and make that elbow out of piping.

So, you thought i was full of poo eh? come on, how many times have i said i was going to do something and didnt follow through??? lol jk

Am I the only one that noticed this?

"This is where the dive is made. go to home depot and find a bolt/nut compbo that will fit to hold the turbo and manifold flange together. i could only fit 3 of the 4 bolts in the holes, but it seems to be working just fine."

You can't have a four bolt flange with only three bolts in there..It might work for a little bit but you need to get that fixed.

sure it works. its holding on perfectly fine with no gap or leak at all. hell DarkOne was telling people the 14b would bolt up to the stock manifold but you could only hold it on by 2 bolts. its working fine the way it is, so theres no need to fix something that isnt broken

I'm talking about long term. How many miles will it last, should be the question. Do you really think it will hold at 20psi at xxxxrpm? I'm not tring to diss your kit...

I'm not tring to diss your kit...

no i see what your saying. but a bolt wont fit there. there isnt enough clearence to get a bolt int here that is long enough to make it through the flange. the real question is when will i be running 20 psi? lol not very soon. hopefully a rebuild isnt too far off, but when i do rebuild ill be replacing this turbo anyways for a bigger T3/T4 or something of that nature.

Im glad you got it done, Im happy you did a write-up. When I first read this post I was excited for you, then I saw your write-up with the pics. DON'T EVER POP YOUR HOOD!!! That is one of the saddest things I have seen on a 2GNT, Im surprised you haven't popped your hoses yet. Pull off the entire kit until you can put real pipes on and not those rubber water hoses. I commend you for your effort and what you accomplished in 2 months time, but you should have spent 4 months on it. Im sorry this is such a negative response, I don't normally respond like this to someone who is putting forth an honest effort, I just believe you'll be a lot happier in the end if you put more time and MONEY into it.

what are you recommending be changed besides the intake piping, because if you read those are just temporary pipes until i weld up the IC pipes. and if you read, Ive popped 4 of them lol. those are just until i can get the U bends from summit and weld them up to connect the IC. The downpipe weld will look a lot better after today, because im taking it off, grinding it down and giving the Down pipe a nice hi temp painting. besides those 2 things, i dont see anything else that looks bad.

but its not what it looks like thats important, its how it works. this isnt a show car, this is all for performance. id much rather have a ugly functioning turbo kit then be running NA

EDIT: I just looked at the pics again and im really not sure how you can say that my engine bay is one of the saddast things you have seen on a 2gnt? the manifold looks a little shitty because that pic was taken just after i had taken the manifold off to make the block off plate, and i had re-sprayed it with copper. so on the header flange the copper hasnt burned all the way off yet, giving it that ugly brown/red color. otherwise i dont think it looks too bad at all. im not sure where you are getting this from. ehh whatever its not the finished project, i dont think it looks to bad and it is functioning quite well and thats all that really matters

Great job!

For the IC piping go to summitracing.com and search for mandrel bend u-bends(SUM-622003) @ $16.95 each. That is what I used for my exhaust, ic piping and dump tube. They have from 1.75 to 3 inch mandrel bend aluminized pipe. After cutting and welding you can polish them. They start at around $12.00 to $20.00.

nice job on the install. just a random question how much psi does that fuel pump support? Will you have to swap it out to run 7 or 8 psi?

swap out the walbro 255 HP? most definatly not. its a good pump, and capable of pretty decent numbers. i wont be able to run as mush boost with the stock injectors tho because the pressures will be getting way to high for the pump to keep up. but with some smaller injectors to relieve some pressure, i think its capable of some big numbers. not exactly sure on how big tho.

lol by blown 4 of those i mean i actually blew holes in them, not just blew them off the turbo. there not holding up at all lol. i actually ordered my couplings off ebay tonight. 5 silicone red ones for like $25. i got them from a company on there called like hi temp silicone or something. just search silicone couplers and they will come up. i was gonna order a silicone elbow but there really expensive so i think i will just put a regular coupler on the end of the turbo, and put a bend piece of piping there.

On another note, i might have an alternative to the copper gasket spray. i went to autozone tonight to get that hi temp 1200 degree paint for my downpipe and they didnt have any. they had this paint called "Flame Proof" paint, said it was good from 1300 to 2000 degrees. it went on the downpipe real nice, i got the alluminum color and it looks just like the ceramic coating i see. it says ceramic coating on the bottle lol. i dunno just some food for thought

i made my own kit too. every person i showed it too thinks its the crappiest turbo setup ever cause i used parts from everywhere to make it. but when i went to the track for the first time ever and put down a 14.3 on my second run they werent so quick to laugh then. i beat them all.. with some good traction ill easily be in the 13's with my home made kit. which aint bad for spending about 300 on the whole thing including my turbo.. all it takes is work.. brainpower and this site. ha. . it dont have to look pretty to be fast. thats my motto.

Nice writeup chris.......I dont see any install picts of the FCD!!!! What gives?

I see you did the welding yourself? Do yourself a favor and pick up a couple pieces of thick steel and practice on a weekend of creatign a bead and laying a nice weld. You will see how fast you clean up your welding with a couple hours of practice. Then you can go over your kit and slowly inprove. Exhaust pipe can be difficult when you are still learning..... If you pick up a pipe expander you can flare the out edge of one pipe to make the next pipe fit nicer, makes the welding easier when you are learning since you work the bead from one edge into the other. practice different wire speeds and heat ranges.

Overall...... Good job, nice to see the work you put into it and didnt give up.

Terry

haha ive been meaning to ask you if you wanted me to give your name out for the FCD. i didnt put it in the write-up incase you didnt want your name out for them. Ive also been getting people asking me where i got the FDC. Do you want me to give your name out?

Im actually really suprised how much my welding has improved over this project. the beeds i welded when i welded the collector on were perfect, but the top one i forgot to turn the argon on so i had to redo it and it doesnt look as good but the bottom weld on the collector is PERFECT!! lol im proud of it. but the downpipe welds besides the middle one were all with no argon cuz we are out and my shop teacher wont order more until next year, so the welds are not clean at all. for the important welds(manifold, etc.) i take it to my dads work where hes got a super nice welder. but i cant really practice alot since i dont have a welder.

thanks for the opinions and pointers, keep them coming

Looks like the names out now HA! Are you going to weld the IC pipes yourself? If so be really careful with that, aluminum isn't as easy to weld as steel. Hit up some of the fabricators on this board for pointers (it's been so long since I welded anything I've almost forgotten how) and good luck on it. If I ever get to that point I think I'll just tack the IC pipes together and take them to a welder to have them professionally done

well i got steel pipes, so they should be easier to weld. i might just line them up and tack them at school, then take it to my dads work to weld them since he will have argon
