#43492, "Zex Nitrous Kit- Where is the TPS located?"

A buddy and I recently installed the zex universal kit for his 97GS. There are three wires comming off of the throttle body. We were told that the TPS sensor needed to activate the unit comes off one of those wires. After checking the voltages of each wire against the voltages when the throttle is at WOT, we came to the conclusion that the TPS lead is the red wire.

Here is where it gets interesting. After taking a test run in his car, we found that his nitrous is activating when you throw the activation switch. Those of you that are familiar with the zex kit know that it is not supposed to activate unless you have your foot to the floor and at the WOT.

My question is, what did we do wrong? We suspected the NMU is malfunctioning, or we could have the wrong wire. Can someone with expecience with this kit give a little bit of insight.

Any help is appreciated,

-Erik

Well it has been said before that you can't use the Zex kit because our TPS doesn't have the correct voltage to make the kit work right. Make sure that you don't spray at anything but Wide open throttle because you might blow the engine. I would call Zex to see what the voltage needs to be for it to work right.

uhhhh.... i have a 97RS, and unless your buddy has revamped his whole fuel system with a 95 set up, then dont try and spray anymore or you will blow the engine. the 97+ cars cant use a dry kit cause of our fuel system. use a voltage detector to test the WOT voltage, it has to be at LEAST 4.5 to use the ZEX kit, and when i tested mine it was barely over 4.1. again, if ur buddies car is a 97, and ZEX hasnt came out with a wet kit im not aware of, the dry kit wont work, it will blow the motor.

Spraying without enough fuel would be really bad. He may have already done some damage if he sprayed a lot. I wonder if there is anyway to modify the ZEX box to have it activate a fuel solenoid and make it a wet kit. Hmm. . . I think it can be done. But then there is the voltage problem, but I am sure an electronics wiz like corbin could figure something out to make that work.

The newer ZEX NMU's have a self learn mode, meaning that it learns the voltage curve of the TPS on your car. Lets say it doesn't produce 4.5volts like you say, it is still supposed to learn whatever voltage WOT is at and activate the solenoid then.

Interesting that you say that it wont work for the 97+ cars. I thought that by re-routing the FPR through the NMU it is supposed to kick up the fuel pressure by creating more vacuum in the line when the nitrous is activated.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I am not sure why you can't use a dry kit on his car. I figured that a 55 Shot would be well within the capibility of the stock fuel system of the car. Any more insight on this.

The fuel pressure regulator on the 96+ OBD-II cars is back by the fuel filter and the return line is back there too. You would have to change the fuel system to a similar setup to the 95 OBD-I cars with a return line from the front and the FPR on the fuel rail.

It's not impossible to run a dry kit on the 96+, it is just much more of a pain in the arse, rerouting, chancing things etc.
