well its just an odd noise. i am taking off the oil pan in a little bit once the oil cools down to see if maybe a bearing is jacked up on the connecting rod. if the bearing is messed up then i can just swap a new one in and i should be ok. if the bearing scored the crank shaft then im in deep trouble! its just when ever the car starts up it makes this odd ping ping ping knocking noise and it doenst do it at idle. just when i start to accelerate the gas pedal down the rpm's start to climb up. doesnt make sense to me. any suggestions or anything ?????

Thrown rods do not go "ping". Thrown rods sound like someone it beating your motor with a sledgehammer.

Rod bearings have this deep, evil "tock tock tock tock" that increases with engine speed. It's an ominous sound. Makes me nervous just thinking about it.

maybe it is just a rod bearing then ... its almost like a tock tock tock (knocking) noise. im taking the oil pan off in 2 minutes to see whats up. how do i tell if its just the bearing that needs replaced???? thanks so much.

Maybe you put the bulkhead in the oil pan for the oil return line where a rod is knocking it when it throws. Just an idea.

My oil return line came with a bulkhead (shown below)

When installing we had to be careful to not have it inline with a rod or it would have (could have I think) hit. If your oil fitting on the pan isn't like this then thats probably not the case for you. It just sounded like a possibility when you said you first started it up and heard the noise.

It is a click, click or a clack, clack sound. Try checking on the wastegate rod. It maybe loose. If so, it will do a clicking noise and the turbo will not boost sometimes. I don't see why it damage a rod bearing just by installing a turbo kit before running the car first.

SOunds like he has a STAR kit. There is no wastegate rod - it's an external gate, which is what real men use.

If you want to check the rod bearings, drop the pan. look for lots of free play in the rod big end (some side-to-side is normal, up and down its not.) If the bearing is on its way out, you'll see visible metal in the pan. I don't really expect it to be a rod bearing.

What kind of condition is the turbo in?

the turbo is brand new. turbobetics just sent me my new one and i put it on this morning and then started it up and got this noise. and when driving i get it too when i accelerate and the turbo only spools sometimes. hmm, what else do you think it could be if you dont think its a bearing?

Check it. Do a compression test. What do your fuel pressures look like? How much boost are you seeing on the gauge? How does your blinky-light AF gauge look?

Have you ever heard of a mechanic's stethescope? Invest in one, or use a couple of long ratchet extensions, put them to various things on your motor while its running, and put your ear on the other end. it allows you to pinpoint the exact area a noise is coming from. Try it.

check what ???? um i didnt really build any boost becuz this noise would start up when i would start to hit the gas to build up boost so i didnt really see any. my air/fuel is not a blinky one either, its an ac autotechnic gauge and reads with a needle and it seems to be reading fine. i dont know what else this could be ... any ideas besides a bad bearing, lifter or what ??

UPDATE ....... well I DEFFINATELY spun cylinder #1's rod bearing. i took off the cap and it was jacked the heck up i guess you could say. i took off another one (i forget which cylinder) and it was pretty much border line to being spun so that one needs replaced as well. i didnt check the other 2 until i rotate the crank when i put on the bearings. but i will be replacing them anyway. does anyone know the size of bearings i need? i think they are standard 1.885 but im not positive ... anyone know? the crank on cyl #1 picth was off just a tad, not bad so hopefully it will hold another bearing ... thank god i quit driving asap or i woulda been outta motor for awhile. any advice or comments welcome!!!!!! will update a new forum tomorrow evening when i am done fixing this BS. somehow or another, i must have over rev'd the engine for this to happen or i lost oil pressure when the other turbo blew, i dunno. im kinda curious tho!!!!

Probably loss of oil pressure, either from massive oil loss through the turbo or something unrelated. Who knows.

alright after the hassle of putting in new rod bearings in all 4 rods top and bottom, 2 of the 4 spun and the other 2 were real close. the oil pump filter caught all of the shavings thank god they didnt go up into the lashers ... so anyway, got the pan back on, reutrn pipe clamped back on, fresh synthetic oil in, downpipe bolted back up to turbo and apex-i cat, now just waiting on the battery to charge up to start this mutha. give it a half hour and ill have some news on if i got anymore noises when it starts up. i cant quite drive it yet cuz its raining out ... you think this did any damage to the turbo? very very play in the shaft i found, i think its how it came tho.

Yes, that is the one. But I don't remember the number. If this helps, it kind like the same size as the T-25. I'm sure is smaller than a T-3 or 16G. What I can tell you is that with this combination I outrun my friend's GST running 16psi and big FMI by like four cars lenght. I'm running 10psi.

You'll probably spin them again. Invest in an oil pressure gauge, and a micrometer to check the crank for out-of-round.

Ya i was going to say ^^^ that too. when i got my car it was knocking....thats why i got it for 800 bucks..and i found it was a spun rod bearing. i pulled the crank and brought it to a machine shop to have them turn the crank becuase the spun bearing scard the crank and i had to a get a new crank kit becuase it was so bad. i dont know...that sounds iffy just throwing in new bearings on a crank journal that had a spun bearing....

Dude, I have no idea why you are even trying to run the motor with bad rod bearings, let alone BOOST it!..If there is too much clearance between the crank journal and bearing, that causes low oil pressure. And if you have low oil pressure, that means you have not a whole lot of pressure/flow of oil going into your turbo's bearing section..Hope you didnt fuk up your new turbo! You need to either get a new(used) crank, or have your crank journals turned at a machine shop, and use over sized bearings. There is no other way around it. When bearings get tore up,it most ALWAYS tears up the crank journal..the bearing material is softer than the crank material, but it still can score it, or make it out of round. This causes too much clearance, and you still will have rod knock, and low oil pressure, until you get it fixed properly..

You do realize that you aren't supposed to make boost all the time, right?

well the one rod that spun caused the crank to be barely out of round ... would some oversized bearings fix this or no until i have money to get a new crank and new rods/pistons to up the boost ?

well heres what hap'd ... i had a crappy dipstick and i put in 6 quarts of oil cuz the dipstick wasnt right. so im guessing i just got some blow by oil in the turbo but there still isnt much play and now that i fixed it its runnin fine. now im using 10w-40 full synthetic oil and some STP engine oil stuff to make it thicker ... now my rod bearings arent rattling around anymore because of the thicker oil but i am still being easy on the throttle and boosting until i replace that crankshaft and internals but im up and running for now and have a smooth idle and no more oil light!!!!!!!
