#91374, "Painting wheels"
Dec-18-05 08:44 PM by BlackMagic

Hey don't worry this isn't a question concerning how to do it, just posting up a pic and wondering what you guys think. This was my first attempt painting a wheel, it turned out alright, the other 3 will definately be better though, a lot smoother looking, i went a little heavy on the paint on this one, kinda running in a few spots but not too bad. but here you go

i would've gone with a gunmetal, but i just love it when black cars have black wheels with a lip around them. Alright well let the comments/possible flaming begin!

I love that look too blackmagic. Its gonna look really good...especially if your calipers are red or even black themselves.

Nice job!

Yea.

Curtis, you should strip the whole wheel down with aircraft stripper. I see you still have the OEM paint surrounding the black. It makes it look a lot cleaner.

That looks pretty good and I'm sure the rest will turn out better. I just wish I had more ambition to do mine, after a day the black looks like crap. Be ready to wipe them down all the time.

Looking good!

What kind of paint did you use? Did you rattle can it or use a paint gun?

rattle can all the way man! haha, im too cheap for a paint gun, i used just a plain duplicolor gloss black base and duplicolor 'high performance' wheel clear coat or something like that

im looking for a set of the factory 5 spokes myself. i want those for winter wheels for my car. i wouldnt paint wheels, id rather wait some more, save and shell out for powdercoat. i mean, its a wheel and its always right next to the road, its always exposed and rocks and shit fly. i know mine would chip in a week. but maybe its just me.

I just wish my car was as fast as it was loud. people tell me i should use my sub to push it, it might go faster.

eh we'll see, i put a bunch of coats of both color and clear so it'll have to chip pretty deep to go through it all, but i'll just use some touchup paint or somethin if it happens

i guess. what i was saying though, you know how rocks chip windshields and crack them on highways? that paint isnt nearly as thick as the glass. powdercoat on something like wheels or calipers is worth it

I've painted more than a few sets of wheels with Dupli-Color wheel paint and it holds up amazingly. Dont worry Curtis, you'll be fine.

OK Deej. Your right it will hold up fine. But we were talking about after you have new tires put on and the shop has to pop your center cap it will start chipping no matter what you do. Just a heads up!
But dont listen to me as i have no idea what im talking about because ive never done it before VVVVV BlackMagic, From now on you should just PM DJ with these questions to save us the trouble of answering your questions incorrectly. This was prepped as good as you can prep a wheel and shot professionally. But has also been daily driven through three winters, so what do you expect.

Your right, But it may be the way the center caps are on the GSX wheels, which is what he did. Either way, you've already painted them so whats the difference. Its either going to happen or it wont. Hey, they look good for now for dont worry about it.

Agreed. Listen to people who have actually done these things. It will be fine. My calipers have been painted for years and even the Eclipse wording hasnt come off.
But has also been daily driven through three winters, so what do you expect.

how did they manage to mess it up around the center cap, did u paint it with the center cap on then it chipped off when they were takin it off?

wel i painted my valve cover and intake pipe with rustoleum thermal paint. that holds up well. i kinda like powdercoat more cuz you can get more colors. im a fan of doing something once and not having to have to redo it. but defeinitely paint the wheels and let us know how that holds up

I just wish my car was as fast as it was loud. people tell me i should use my sub to push it, it might go faster.

did they try to pry off the center cap instead of taking out the lock in the back and pushing it out

welll today is no better, in fact might be worse, went to the dmv to try and get an address change/re-register so i don't have to do emissions testing and turns out my liscence is suspended and i need to take a saturday class and pay 115 dollars to get it re-instated. then my friend with the spring compressor backed out so i can't install the suspension today, and the rest of the exhaust still isn't here and i called hahn they said it will be here mid 2nd week of january (ordered it 2 weeks ago) so yea today = no good

If you've got 40 bucks you can go down to Autozone and get one. Then return it and get your money back.

Curtis, I am going to say the opposite of what I really think of your car because of pure jealousy.

Your car sucks. I really dont like it. I am pissed to see that it has gone no where since you joined here. You couldnt have spent more than 50 bucks on it. The wheels, well they look like ass. And those tires are the ugliest looking things I have ever seen.

end humor

...Your car looks awesome man, awesome fucking job on everything

I'll be painting my rims later this week when I have the weekend off. A very light "gunmetal" color with a polished lip. Nice job man.

Nice work, but I really really really don't like that gay eBay front lip.

Just personal preference though.

Wheels look good.

If you were having finish problems, I don't know your painting technic, but paint them slowly instaed of trying to achive coverage in 2 coats. I would put thin coats on until covered and wait like 3 or more minutes in between coats. This will keep the paint from sagging. I have used dupli color along with dupont clear coat out of a HVLP gun and got amazing results for my little projects. Dupli color base works fine for little projects without paying 60 to 80 dollars for a pint of base coat at the autopaint supply store.
