#945, "VR-4 or GS-T what should I do?"

So I got my VR-4. Had it for a month, that car is FAST! But then again they are expensive to modify and heavy as all hell and can't break into the 9s for shit, considering the Twin Turbo set-up.

No one wants my GS-T or has the money for it. ($2500!!!)I was considering putting it in storage and then when the spring time comes, modding the ever living crap out of it, maybe a good EVO 3 set-up, BPU's and some other stuff.

As for the VR-4, I'm working on getting a good sound system together, and not touching the engine. Boost controller, cat-back exhaust, thats what, 350-375HP crank? I'm happy with that!

Call me crazy, but that red GSX i posted about, came to my work. I detailed her and worked on her all week. Ended up being sold today for $4,000! 54K on a '97 GSX 5-speed mechanically MINT for $4,000! WTF?!?!? and yes, sold to a girl, who has no idea how to drive, but just liked the sweet look of an Eclipse... WTF?!? I had to vent, sorry!

So, is it cool if I mod the crap out of my GS-T and keep 2 turbo cars? I can afford the insurance, the VR-4 payments, and the mods for BOTH cars! Would modding my Eclipse get me to sell it easier? Bah, I need some input, thanks guys, Nick

I can tell you right now I would never buy a car with any aftermarket parts on it unless I personanly knew the driver. A car with performance parts has most likley been run pretty hard, why else would they be on there. From a finacial standpoint you could dump another 2500$ in performance parts into it and it still would'nt be worth anymore. If you want to sell it, sell it stock if you still have your old parts and sell the performance stuff, you will never get as much out of a car as you put into it.

No, not really. Mods just mean you have to take a loss in money when selling it really.

i'm kicking myself for not saving my GST stock exhaust. I don't think i'll un-do the 16g mod, though, but its not going to really help me much in selling my eclipse...

Stock is 300HP on 9psi of boost, Dynamic Racing rates their stage 1 upgrade, an intake and boost controller set to 15psi at about 365HP. I have 3" cat-back and a boost controller set to 15psi... so I've figured I'm around there somewhere. Maybe I have only 301HP @ crank, but either way my VR-4 fucking romps!

Or did you guys think I was talking about my GS-T?!?

I just need to get rid of my GS-T. The mods are intake, racing clutch/flywheel and a-pillar with gauges and 2 pioneer 6x9s in the back. Thats it, no exhuast, no boost controller, nothing spiffy or anything of the sorts... isn't $2500 cheap for a GS-T? Or are 2Gs now wicked cheap, cuz when I ebay'ed GS-T/Xs a year ago, people were selling 95s with the same mileage for over $4,000... and yes, they were modded too...

I think, from my personal experiance of knowing you, that you should def. not sell serena to just any person. But you shouldnt get rid of the VR4 either. Do what you said. Mod the GST in the spring, do it up big "ricer style" and make it faster then fast, but i think that you should use the VR4 for more of a show. hot system, fast, but not modded, sick interior.. chyeah know??

just my opinion.

or you could hold the GST until i get enough money, teach me standard and then sell it to me.. cuz i love it

I believe a few of us already told you that before you bought the car.
Obviously, you can't stand your Eclipse but are still a Mitsu fan. You can afford both cars and modify them. I'd say sell both of them, get an EVO, and be done with it.
BTW, stock crank horsepower on 3/S VR4s is 320hp with torque at 315.

I think the earlier 3/s were rated at 300 and the later models at 320, I could be wrong though.

Funny, but neither am I kid and VR4s are not rare. Rare would be a GT3 or Carrera GT, a Saleen S7, etc. Don't get me wrong, I like VR4s but wouldn't have one to modify and definately wouldn't try to get one in the 9s. THAT'S a waste of time. It takes a lot more than just shaving weight to get a normal car in the 9s. Nine second cars are very very few that you see on the road. Almost anyone that has that amount of time and money in anything that runs 9s will hardly ever drive it on the road, and if they do they will not waste gas on anything that tries to mess with them unless it's a rare exotic like I stated earlier.

91-93 had a wastegate or boost solenoid or some electronic crap that was uncontrolled by the driver set to 9psi, the extra 20HP in the 94-99s was from a 2psi increase i think...

an EVO would be a waste of time. Yeah I like Mitsu, but its a new car, with a 4cyl! I like my TQ and HP, I don't care how fat my car is, just means I need to be a better driver and figure out how to drop some weight off the car. A VR-4 is sweet to me, becuz its RARE! What you're saying is basically sell your RX-7 Twin Turbo for a brand new RX-8 cuz its a Mazda car.

Breaking into the 9s, when I really think about it, if I got into the 11s with my car, and someone smoked me in a street race, they can get my respect. I doubt if my VR-4 ran 10.5 in the 1/4 that a 9sec Supra would pull along side my car at a dead stop and try and race me. That just doesnt happen around here, nor are the kinda cars around, and think of the odds...

But anyways, GS-T is still up for sale for $2500. I have an interested buyer who is a friend of mine, but he doesn't care if I let her go to someone else. Yeah, I live in Massachusetts, a town next to Acton and Westford.

Another thing on VR-4s, yeah, you guys may have told me that it wasn't the best buy out there. But rarity, looks, features, engine size, twin turbos, AWD, it got me on the HOOK! My mother also always dreamed of owning/driving a VR-4, thats why she co-signed the loan for the car, and yes, she's about 4'11", 100% Japanese, in her 40s and steals my car every weekend day that I am hungover and too messed up to drive it, hahah!

I even have a VR4 and I can admit EVO's are better cars. They weight less and handle WAY better but they are pretty even in the 1/4 from low rolls. The VR4 has a better gear ratio. I think the VR4 looks better then an EVO though

Maybe it's just the 2G FWD's that are rare.

Well I will say that it is probably one of the only (if not the only) copper GS-T in MA...(I've only ever seen one other copper eclipse, and it was a GS)

So there's your rarety factor!

But, you're not from Massachusetts.
I've seen a few. At least 5. I know one of them belonged to a former board member and was probably one of the most sorry looking 2G's I have ever seen. It was stored in RI but owner was fom MA. Todd and Bill can attest to it's fuckedupness.

I told you this before. You dont take out a loan to buy a car that is 15 years old. Do one project at a time, unless you have the cash already. ANYWAYS, although I love the 4G63 and it has way more potential then the 6G72 in the long run, the 6G72 has such a nice ammount of power from the factory. There aren't to many clean VR4s around and although I think about getting an EVO all the time (cause it's a better car for the $), I see 20 EVO's for every 1 VR4 I see.
I think 2G VR4's are one of the best looking cars for it's time (same price range). The reason no one is in the 9's is because it's a lot easier to do in a Supra, Skyline or RX-7 and people haven't put the time an effort that people put into Supra's. In Japan a VR4 has the top speed record for it's class. Ray's car will be in the 9's shortly and is putting down 800AWHP!! Mike, at AAM, had the record for years on his 20G's (which are 2 big for his setup) and now 3 people have broken his record in 2005 alone. W/ Ray's stroker kit or the Montero 3.5L swap (or both ), the potential for our cars will change a lot. They are still heavy, expensive to maintain and a pain to work on but they are such awesome cars. END OF RANT. BTW, since when are you so worried about running 9's?

Wow, you must really want someone to reply. I guess I've got nothing better to do.
You are absolutely correct with everything you said. However, roughly 9 out of 10 people are on a tight budget and 3000GT VR4s are definately not the way to go for those people. Those that you mentioned above have tons of money and time wrapped up in them that most people simply can't afford. Nick was also over-stressing the RARE issue with VR4s and they just aren't that rare. I would love to have a black 1G Stealth RT as they are my favorite, but it isn't in the cards right now. If I ever have one, all I'd do would add K/Ns, larger exhaust, and a mbc, plus some suspension and wheel/tire mods.

Not really. The reply is mostly for NHH to see, since I helped him when he was deciding whether or not to get the VR4 in the first place. I told him not to get a 15 year old car that you have to take a loan out on. Even if you have the $ for any used car, you need to have back up cash for an "o sh*t" fund. It's the same for modding IMO. If you have a 2gnt and you want a $2000 turbo kit you better have extra cash after the purchase in case something happens. Just my 2 cents since I have had these things happen to me. My transmission went the first weekend I owned the VR4 and my motor blew a couple months after I turbo'ed the 2gnt. Bad luck but I was financially ready for both cases cause I knew I was buying a 11 year old car, and in the case of the 2gnt, turboing an NA car.
