#253, "Squeeking or Rubbing noise in Rear (FIX)"

I receive Service Slants on all vehicles in production. These are tips from dealer, mechanics,
and other sources in the Automotive field. These are usually considered right BELOW the TSB
level. In other words, the problems are found and then published so any other technician can
SEE the problem and READ about the problem incase they should come up on it in their work.
I am publishing some of these so WE -the enthusiast can see them also. REMEMBER, THIS is
NOT a recall and the dealers are not bound to fix these problems. BUT, If you have these
PROBLEMS, Taking this article with you may help the technician find/fix the problem. These
Service Slants can be found in MOTOR publications which MOST reputable shops/technicians
receive monthly and are also published on disk for the shops (for a fee).
This Service Slant is listed for Chrysler but also relates to the Mitsubishi Eclipse.

SQUEAKING OR RUBBING NOISE IN THE REAR.

Some 1995-98 Chrysler Sebrings,Dodge Avengers and Eagle Talons (Mitsu Eclipses) built before
1/21/98 may give off a squeaking or hard rubbing noise from the rear (most likely from the trailing
arm area) when traveling over bumps. But trying to figure out the exact cause may not be easy.
Chrysler says it's important to understand WHEN the customer hears the noise: When turning?
At Speed? On a bumpy road? Do your best to duplicate the conditions. Ride along with the
customer if necessary.
If you can't pinpoint the source of the noise, go over all the suspension bits. Check for wear,
damage and proper tightening torque. If everything checks out and and/or you've at least
determined that the noise is coming from the trailing arm area, you have to upgrade the trailing
arm bushings. Order the following part numbers, but keep in mind that you'll need two of each
on either side of the car (total of eight bushings).

OUTSIDE BUSHING STOPPER..........................MR316383
INSIDE BUSHING STOPPER..............................MR316384

(You will notice that the part number is a Mitsu part so you should be able to get them at either
dealerships.)
